Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market Overview
The Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market comprises the equipment, consumables and services used to develop and manufacture biologics, including monoclonal antibodies, therapeutic proteins, vaccines and cell and gene therapies. It covers upstream processing (cell culture media, reagents, cell lines and bioreactors), downstream processing (clarification, chromatography and filtration), single-use bioprocessing containers and assemblies, supporting equipment such as mixers, incubators, centrifuges, shakers, sterilizers and biosafety cabinets, and support services such as validation and maintenance.
Bioprocessing is a recurring-revenue market. Once a biologic is approved, its manufacturing process, including the filters, resins, media and single-use components, is specified in the regulatory filing and is rarely changed, so every commercial product creates demand for consumables over its lifetime. Consumables accounted for a large majority of the 2025 bioprocess sales of Sartorius, and filtration and chromatography consumables are the largest product categories.
The market passed through a destocking period in 2023–2024, when customers reduced inventories built up during the COVID-19 pandemic and delayed capital projects. Growth returned in 2025, led by consumables, while equipment sales still declined at several suppliers. In 2026, equipment demand began to recover: Danaher reported mid-teens growth in bioprocessing orders in the second quarter of 2026 and described the industry as being in the early stage of a multi-year capital spending cycle driven by reshoring.
The geography of production is changing. U.S. tariffs on patented pharmaceutical imports from September 2026, together with more than USD 370 billion of U.S. investment pledges, are shifting new capacity toward the U.S., while CDMOs in South Korea, China and India continue to add large-scale capacity. Suppliers are responding with in-region manufacturing; Cytiva has completed USD 1.6 billion of capacity investments since 2019 across resins, filtration, single-use products and media in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The market is expected to grow 2.4-fold between 2026 and 2036, with bioreactors, bioprocessing containers, cell and gene therapy and CDMOs as the main sources of growth, while sterilizers, incubators and biosafety cabinets grow more slowly as single-use and closed systems replace stainless-steel and open processing.
Biologics account for a growing share of new medicines. The FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research approved 46 novel drugs in 2025, including 12 biologics, after 50 in 2024 and 55 in 2023, and the European Medicines Agency authorized 69 new therapies in 2025, up from 64 in 2024. The Antibody Society reported 21 antibody therapeutics granted a first approval in at least one country in 2024, including bispecific antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates, and 30 antibody therapeutics in regulatory review as of December 2024.
Biosimilars add further volume. As of March 2026, 92 biosimilars across 20 molecules had been approved in the U.S., of which 67 had launched, and in October 2025 the FDA issued draft guidance indicating that comparative efficacy studies may no longer be routinely expected, which lowers the cost and time of biosimilar development. As a result, commercial bioproduction is expected to account for 77.6% of the market in 2026.
Biopharmaceutical Plant Capacity Expansions
Major drugmakers announced more than USD 370 billion of U.S. investments in 2025, according to DPR Construction, including a USD 27 billion plan by Eli Lilly for four new plants announced in February 2025 and a USD 55 billion commitment by Johnson & Johnson. The Section 232 proclamation of April 2026 reinforces this trend: about 53% of patented pharmaceutical products distributed in the U.S. are produced abroad, and companies without onshoring agreements face tariffs of up to 100% from September 29, 2026.
CDMOs are also adding capacity. Samsung Biologics reached 784,000 liters of capacity with its fifth plant and plans more than 1.3 million liters once its second Bio Campus is completed. Every new plant requires bioreactors, chromatography systems, filtration and single-use assemblies, followed by recurring consumables once production starts, which explains why Danaher reported mid-teens growth in bioprocessing orders in the second quarter of 2026.
Customer Inventory and Investment Cycles
Customers reduced inventories and delayed capital projects in 2023–2025. Sartorius reported that its bioprocess equipment business declined in 2025 because of industry-wide investment restraint, Avantor reported a 1.8% organic decline in Bioscience Production sales to USD 2,153 million in 2025, and Eppendorf reported an 11.5% decline in its bioprocess business, partly because it discontinued sterilization-in-place products. These cycles make equipment demand more volatile than consumables demand.
Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market Opportunities
Shift Toward Bioprocessing 4.0
Connected equipment, in-line process analytical technology, digital twins and automated batch records shorten development and batch release and improve yields. Repligen reported more than 30% growth in analytics in the second quarter of 2026, Sartorius launched the cloud-based Biobrain Operate platform, and Thermo Fisher opened a Bioprocess Design Center in Plainville, Massachusetts, in April 2026 to help customers develop and scale processes.
Intensive Capital Requirements for Biopharmaceutical Production
New biologics plants cost hundreds of millions to billions of dollars and take several years to build and qualify, and capacity decisions are exposed to interest rates, drug pricing policy and trade policy. U.S. most-favored-nation pricing agreements and tariffs create uncertainty for manufacturers deciding where to locate new capacity, and suppliers must fund their own capacity ahead of demand; Sartorius invested EUR 442 million in 2025, 12.5% of sales.
Consolidation Around Filtration, Advanced Therapies and Analytics
Thermo Fisher completed the acquisition of the Solventum purification and filtration business in September 2025, which was expected to generate about USD 750 million of revenue in 2025, Merck KGaA agreed to acquire Bio-Techne in June 2026 to strengthen research, bioprocessing and advanced therapy offerings, and Repligen agreed to acquire BioLife Solutions in July 2026.
Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market Segment Analysis
Market dynamics
5 factors across 1 forceRising Adoption of Single-use Bioprocessing Equipment
Single-use systems eliminate cleaning and sterilization, reduce the use of water for injection and steam, and shorten changeovers between products, which suits multi-product and CDMO facilities. The revised EU GMP Annex 1, applicable since August 2023, requires a contamination control strategy for sterile manufacturing that favors closed, pre-sterilized systems. Sartorius reported that consumables such as filters and single-use bags drove its 2025 growth, and single-use bioreactors are projected to grow at 12.8%, compared with 7.2% for reusable systems.
Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market Restraints
Complexities in the Development & Manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals
Biologics are produced in living cells, and small process changes can alter product quality. Changes to equipment, consumables or suppliers therefore require comparability studies and regulatory approval, which makes customers reluctant to adopt new technologies for approved products. Product-specific demand can also be volatile: Danaher reported in July 2026 that customer-requested delays of chromatography resin shipments would shift a little more than USD 100 million of bioprocessing revenue out of 2026, and Bio-Rad reported a 13% currency-neutral decline in process chromatography in the first quarter of 2026 against a tough comparison.
Asia-Pacific is projected to register the highest CAGR of 10.3% during the forecast period,
led by India at 12.4%, South Korea at 11.0% and China at 10.8%. Repligen reported about 40% growth in Asia-Pacific in the second quarter of 2026 and more than 60% growth in China in the first half of 2026, Thermo Fisher reported that China returned to growth in the same quarter, and Sartorius is building a new site in Songdo, South Korea, to serve the region.
Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market Challenges
Use of Disposable Processing Equipment for Commercial Production
Single-use technologies, first adopted for clinical manufacturing, are moving into commercial production through scale-out with multiple 2,000-liter bioreactors. Bioprocessing containers are projected to grow at 10.1%, faster than the market, while sterilizers are projected to grow at 6.8%, the lowest rate among product types.
Rising Focus on Continuous Bioprocessing and Process Intensification
Perfusion upstream processes, high-density cell banks and continuous or multi-column chromatography increase productivity and reduce facility size. Repligen reported an improvement in ATF perfusion order trends in 2026, and Cytiva has doubled chromatography resin capacity in Uppsala, Sweden, to meet demand for high-capacity resins.

Expert perspectives
The Biopharmaceutical Processing Equipment and Consumables Market has moved past the post-pandemic destocking cycle and is entering a new investment phase. Consumables recovered first in 2025, and equipment orders began to follow in 2026 as drugmakers and CDMOs committed to new plants. Because every new commercial biologic locks in consumables demand for its lifetime, current capacity announcements support recurring revenue well into the 2030s.
Three structural changes are expected to shape competitive positions through 2036. First, trade policy is regionalizing production: U.S. tariffs on patented pharmaceuticals favor domestic plants, and customers expect suppliers to manufacture critical consumables in the region they serve. Second, modalities are diversifying beyond monoclonal antibodies into antibody-drug conjugates, bispecifics, cell and gene therapies and biosimilars, which increases demand for specialized media, single-use systems and purification. Third, consolidation is creating integrated suppliers, as shown by the Solventum filtration, Bio-Techne and BioLife Solutions transactions.
For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions are likely to be found in single-use bioreactors and assemblies, high-capacity chromatography resins, filtration for new commercial plants, cell and gene therapy consumables, process analytics and supply of CDMOs in Asia-Pacific. For established suppliers, the principal risks are customer investment cycles, order timing volatility and price pressure from biosimilar producers and regional competitors.
