Key highlights

01

The Vietnam next generation sequencing market is projected to reach USD 222.53 million by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 12.6% during 2026 to 2036, driven by rapidly rising cancer incidence, the establishment of a population specific reference genome, and the continued expansion of privately funded genomic services.

02

According to IARC GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, Vietnam recorded 180,480 new cancer cases and 120,184 cancer deaths, with new cases nearly doubling within a decade and forecast to rise a further 45% by 2045.

03

The VN1K project, conducted at the VinGroup Big Data Institute with approximately USD 4.5 million committed, analysed 1,011 individuals from 53 of Vietnam's 63 provinces and identified more than 42 million genetic variants, of which approximately 8.5 million had never been recorded in major international databases, producing the Vietnamese PanGenome Reference published in Nature Communications in July 2026.

04

As of 2018, approximately 13 trained medical geneticists served a population of over 90 million, and whole genome and whole exome sequencing were not routinely available for clinical care, a shortage that continues to limit how much sequencing output can be converted into reported clinical results.

05

By October 2022, 66 gene sequencers had been installed across Vietnamese healthcare facilities and 50 hospitals were trialling non invasive genomic methods for early cancer detection, while the largest gene sequencing centre in Southeast Asia opened in Hanoi.

06

Extended import licences under Vietnam's medical device registration framework lapsed on 1 July 2025, and in vitro diagnostic registration numbers issued in earlier years lost their validity, introducing product availability risk in a market wholly dependent on imported instruments and reagents.

07

The Law on Personal Data Protection, passed on 26 June 2025 and effective from 1 January 2026, designates health and biometric data as sensitive personal data requiring heightened safeguards and applies extraterritorially to foreign entities processing the data of Vietnamese citizens.

08

Circular 57/2025, issued on 31 December 2025, introduces a six group classification framework for medical device procurement, taking effect from 1 January 2027 and favouring suppliers holding United States Food and Drug Administration or European Conformity approval.

09

Commercial sequencing and outsourced services account for the largest share of market value in 2026 at 41.0%, while data analysis and bioinformatics is expected to register the highest CAGR of 14.6% through 2036, reflecting demand for tools that substitute for scarce interpretive staff.

10

Clinical applications hold the largest share of the market at 58.0% in 2026, with non invasive prenatal testing the largest single clinical application at 40.0% share and oncology the fastest growing at a CAGR of 14.5%.

11

Hospitals, clinical and reference laboratories represent the largest end user group at 38.0% share in 2026 and are expected to register the highest CAGR among end user segments through the forecast period.

Scope note

Segments covered: offering, application, end user.

Clinical applications account for the largest share of market value through most of the forecast period, supported by a cancer burden that has nearly doubled within a decade and by the widening use of sequencing in prenatal and reproductive testing, while oncology represents the fastest growing clinical application as molecular tumor testing gains ground across Vietnamese hospitals.

Next generation sequencing comprises a group of high throughput technologies that determine the order of nucleotides across many DNA or RNA fragments in parallel, allowing the interrogation of targeted gene panels, whole exomes, or whole genomes within a single workflow. The Vietnam market covers revenue generated from sample preparation products, sequencing systems and consumables, data analysis software and informatics services, and commercial sequencing services supplied to organizations operating within the country, regardless of where the supplying entity is located. Revenue is attributed to Vietnam wherever the demand originates, including cases where the physical sequencing is carried out abroad under an outsourced arrangement.

Vietnam has a population of approximately 100 million, the largest in mainland Southeast Asia, supported by a primary care network of roughly 11,000 community health centres. The disease profile has shifted markedly, with the share of mortality attributable to communicable disease falling from 33% in 1996 to a projected 6% in 2026, while cancer has become the clearest illustration of the change. New cancer cases rose from around 68,000 in 2000 to more than 180,000 in 2022, nearly doubling within a decade, and genomic capability has developed rapidly from a low base, principally through private rather than public investment. By October 2022, 66 gene sequencers had been installed nationally and the largest gene sequencing centre in Southeast Asia had opened in Hanoi.

Two features distinguish the Vietnamese market from comparable markets in the region. Vietnam has no government funded national genome programme, so programme scale sequencing demand comes from commercial and institutional decisions rather than from a public budget line, and this is best illustrated by the VN1K project, funded by VinGroup rather than by the state. In addition, a substantial share of Vietnamese sequencing demand is met through outsourced arrangements rather than in house capability, which weights the market toward consumables and services and directs a portion of the value generated by Vietnamese demand toward suppliers located outside the country.

Market dynamics

8 factors across 3 forces
01

Rapid Growth in Cancer Incidence

According to IARC GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, Vietnam recorded 180,480 new cancer cases and 120,184 cancer deaths, equivalent to 151 new diagnoses and 99 deaths per 100,000 population, with more than 409,000 people living with cancer. New cases rose from around 68,000 in 2000 to approximately 125,000 in 2010 and to more than 180,000 today, and GLOBOCAN forecasts a further increase of approximately 45% by 2045. The five most common cancers are breast, liver, lung, colorectal, and stomach, and two of these, lung and colorectal cancer, carry established molecular testing requirements that support tumor mutation testing demand.

02

Establishment of a Population Specific Reference Genome

The VN1K project analysed 1,011 Vietnamese individuals from 53 of the country's 63 provinces and cities, identified more than 42 million genetic variants of which approximately 8.5 million had never been recorded in major international genomic databases, and produced the Vietnamese PanGenome Reference, published in Nature Communications in July 2026. Before this resource, the principal reference for Vietnamese genetic variation comprised just 99 individuals from a single ethnic group studied within the 1000 Genomes Project, so the new reference materially improves diagnostic yield and reduces the interpretive burden carried by a small pool of trained staff.

03

Expansion of Privately Funded Genomic Services

Genomic capability in Vietnam has expanded principally through private investment rather than public appropriation. VinGroup committed approximately USD 4.5 million to the VN1K sequencing work, and the largest gene sequencing centre in Southeast Asia opened in Hanoi. Non invasive prenatal testing, expanded carrier screening, and oncology panel testing are supplied predominantly by private laboratories to patients paying directly, and this volume has been substantial enough that one study derived more than 8 million single nucleotide polymorphisms from the prenatal testing data of 2,683 pregnant women.
