Segments covered: type, material & wavelength, output power, application, end user.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by explosive demand for lasers in AI data center optical interconnects, the emergence of co-packaged optics and external laser sources, the expansion of long-haul and scale-across optical networks, and rapid growth in automotive LiDAR. However, severe shortages of laser chip capacity, price erosion from Asian competition in industrial lasers, export controls on critical materials such as gallium and indium phosphide, and cyclical weakness in industrial demand restrain the growth of this market.

Furthermore, new indium phosphide fabs and larger wafers, high-energy laser defense systems, and LiDAR for robotics are expected to offer growth opportunities for the stakeholders in this market. However, achieving reliability at ever-higher speeds and output powers remains a major challenge impacting the growth of this market. Additionally, the migration to 200G-per-lane lasers, the penetration of optics into in-rack connectivity, and long-term supply agreements and allocation are prominent trends in this market.

The Laser Diodes Market comprises semiconductor lasers that generate coherent light through stimulated emission in a p-n junction, including edge-emitting lasers such as Fabry-Perot, distributed feedback (DFB), electro-absorption modulated (EML), continuous-wave (CW), tunable, and high-power broad-area lasers and bars, as well as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and quantum cascade lasers. They are made from compound semiconductors, principally indium phosphide (InP) for 1.3 and 1.55 micrometer telecom and datacom wavelengths, gallium arsenide (GaAs) for 650 to 1,100 nanometer wavelengths including pump lasers and VCSELs, and gallium nitride (GaN) for blue, green, and ultraviolet lasers. The market covers laser chips, packaged laser diodes, and laser subassemblies such as pump modules and external laser sources, across datacom, telecom, industrial, consumer, automotive, medical, defense, and display applications. Complete transceivers, fiber laser systems, and LiDAR sensors are excluded, with laser content valued at the diode or subassembly level. The ecosystem extends from substrate and epitaxy suppliers to laser chip makers, packaging and subassembly providers, transceiver and laser system manufacturers, and end users.

AI is the dominant driver. Optical transceivers linking GPUs and switches in AI clusters depend on EML and CW lasers, and Lumentum, a leading laser chip supplier, reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of USD 1.01 billion, up 109% year on year, with components revenue up 102.7% to USD 649.4 million and new records for 100G and 200G EML shipments, with 200G EMLs exceeding 25% of EML revenue. Lumentum stated it was shipping twice as many laser chips as a year earlier and guided to revenue of about USD 1.25 billion for the September 2026 quarter. Coherent reported fiscal 2025 revenue of USD 5.81 billion, with data center sales up 61%, and tripled its indium phosphide capacity during the year.

New architectures are expanding the addressable market. Lumentum reported increasing demand for ultra-high-power lasers for co-packaged optics (CPO), an initial order for external laser source (ELS) modules, and engagements in near-packaged optics, which its chief executive described as the first signs that optics are starting to penetrate in-rack connectivity. Pump laser shipments for scale-across and subsea networks rose more than 80% year on year, and narrow-linewidth laser assemblies for data center interconnect grew more than 130%. Outside data centers, Hesai shipped approximately 1,620,400 LiDAR units in 2025, more than three times its 2024 volume, and Israel declared its 100-kilowatt Iron Beam high-energy laser defense system ready for operational deployment in September 2025.

Supply cannot keep pace. Lumentum stated in May 2026 that its components and laser chips were effectively sold out, its Japanese wafer fab capacity fully allocated, and the supply-demand imbalance above 30%, prompting customer allocation decisions, with a new indium phosphide fab in Greensboro, North Carolina, expected online in early 2028. At the same time, the industrial laser segment faces falling prices and subdued demand: IPG Photonics reported that competitive pressures, including from Asian competitors that are beginning to export fiber lasers, have resulted in price reductions and declining average selling prices. China's February 2025 export controls on items including indium phosphide, and its control of 99% of primary gallium production, add raw material risk.

Market dynamics

17 factors across 5 forces
01

Explosive Demand for AI Data Center Optical Interconnects

Explosive demand for lasers in AI data center optical interconnects is a major factor driving the Laser Diodes Market. Lumentum reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of USD 1.01 billion, up 109% year on year, with components revenue up 102.7% to USD 649.4 million on record shipments of 100G and 200G EMLs, and stated that it was shipping twice as many laser chips as a year earlier. Coherent reported fiscal 2025 data center sales growth of 61% and began shipping 1.6T transceivers. The transition from 800G to 1.6T and 3.2T transceivers increases both the number of lasers per link and their performance requirements, making lasers one of the most critical components of AI infrastructure.

02

Emergence of Co-Packaged Optics and External Laser Sources

The emergence of co-packaged optics is creating a new category of high-power laser demand. In co-packaged and near-packaged optics, lasers are separated from the switch or processor in external laser source modules that supply high-power continuous-wave light to silicon photonic engines. Lumentum reported in August 2026, alongside fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of USD 1.01 billion, increasing demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers and an initial order for ELS modules, and had received in fiscal 2025 the largest single purchase commitment in its history for ultra-high-power lasers, supported by investment in a U.S.-based indium phosphide fab. Its chief executive stated that these developments are the first signs that optics are penetrating in-rack connectivity, significantly increasing the optical addressable market, and Lumentum raised its September 2026 quarter guidance midpoint to USD 1.25 billion, USD 250 million above the outlook given at the OFC 2026 conference in March.

03

Expansion of Scale-Across and Long-Haul Optical Networks

The expansion of scale-across networks linking AI data centers, and of long-haul and subsea networks, is driving demand for pump lasers and narrow-linewidth lasers. Lumentum reported that pump laser shipments rose more than 80% year on year in fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 and remained effectively sold out despite capacity expansion, while shipments of narrow-linewidth laser assemblies grew sequentially for a tenth consecutive quarter and rose more than 130% year on year. Coherent transceivers for data center interconnect and coherent optics also support this demand.

04

Rapid Growth in Automotive LiDAR

Rapid growth in automotive LiDAR is increasing demand for high-power pulsed laser diodes and VCSEL arrays. Hesai, a leading LiDAR maker, recognized revenue from approximately 1,620,400 LiDAR units in 2025, compared with 501,900 in 2024 and 222,100 in 2023, and its net revenue rose 45.8% to RMB 3,027.6 million. In the second quarter of 2025 alone, its ADAS LiDAR shipments rose 275.8% year on year to 303,564 units, driven by demand in China. Each LiDAR sensor contains one or more laser emitters, and adoption of LiDAR in mainstream vehicles and robots is expanding laser volumes.

Expert perspectives

The Laser Diodes Market has become one of the tightest links in the AI supply chain. Lumentum's revenue more than doubled year on year to USD 1.01 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, yet the company describes its laser chips as effectively sold out with a supply gap above 30%. Coherent's tripling of indium phosphide capacity and move to 6-inch wafers show how quickly leaders are responding, but new fabs such as Lumentum's Greensboro site will not arrive until 2028.

Three structural changes are expected to shape the market through 2036. First, datacom lasers will become the dominant segment, with lane speeds rising from 100G to 200G and 400G and co-packaged optics adding ultra-high-power external laser sources inside the rack. Second, capacity will expand through larger InP wafers and new fabs in North America and Europe, reducing dependence on Asian production. Third, industrial laser diodes will remain under price pressure from Chinese competition, while new demand from LiDAR, robotics, and directed-energy defense diversifies growth.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in InP EML and CW lasers for AI, ultra-high-power lasers for co-packaged optics, InP substrates and epitaxy, and high-power diodes for defense. The principal risks are capacity execution, export controls on gallium and indium phosphide, and price erosion in industrial and consumer segments.
