When a new AI accelerator is hard to get and the wait is long, a GPU that has already done a few years of work in someone else rack starts to look like a sensible purchase. That simple trade is turning into a market of its own.
The Used and Refurbished Data Center GPU Market is valued at USD 4.12 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 21.55 billion by 2036, at a CAGR of 18.0%. That is faster than the AI Servers Market it grows out of, which is valued at USD 395.0 billion in 2026 and projected to reach USD 1,072.1 billion by 2036, at a CAGR of 10.5%.
This blog looks at what is driving the resale market, what holds buyers back and where the opportunities sit. Each section links to the report that sizes it.
How Big Is the Used and Refurbished Data Center GPU Market?
The market was USD 3.15 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 4.12 billion in 2026. By 2036 it is projected at USD 21.55 billion, about 5.2 times the 2026 size. The AI server market, by comparison, grows about 2.7 times over the same period. Resale is growing from a small base, but the pace shows how much installed hardware is waiting to change hands.

The segments show who is buying and how:
- Architecture: NVIDIA Ampere is the largest segment in 2026 and Blackwell and later generations grow fastest. The report expects Hopper to overtake Ampere by 2030 and Blackwell to become the largest architecture by 2036.
- Form factor: Complete GPU servers and systems lead, while SXM and OAM modules and HGX baseboards grow fastest.
- Sales channel: ITAD and lifecycle service providers lead, while online marketplaces and GPU exchanges grow fastest.
- End user: Neoclouds and GPU cloud providers lead, while enterprises grow fastest.
- Application: AI inference is the leading and fastest growing application.
North America holds the largest share in 2026, led by the United States as the biggest source and buyer of secondary GPUs. The Middle East and Africa is the fastest growing region, with the UAE and Saudi Arabia as the key countries.

The reading is straightforward. Resale starts with older generations moving to inference and neocloud buyers, and it moves up the generations as new hardware ships. For the AI server side of the story, including training and inference workloads and rack-scale systems, see the AI Servers Market report.
What Is Driving Demand for Used and Refurbished Data Center GPUs?
Fleets are turning over faster. SK tes reports that GPU-dense servers are now refreshed in 10 to 18 months, against 4 to 6 years for traditional servers. Microsoft retired its V100 based NCv3 virtual machines on 30 September 2025, and Amazon shortened the useful life of a subset of its servers from 6 to 5 years citing the pace of AI technology. Every retirement releases working hardware into the secondary market.
New supply is tight. SK hynix said in October 2025 that it had sold out its DRAM, NAND and HBM capacity for the following year. When memory is scarce, a GPU server that can ship now has real value.
Inference and neocloud buyers want capacity, not the latest chip. NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 data center revenue of USD 193.7 billion, up 68%. Neoclouds are scaling on the same demand, with Nebius reporting Q2 2026 revenue of USD 582.3 million, up 454%, and CoreWeave reporting about USD 2.58 billion. In the resale report, neoclouds are the largest end user and AI inference is the leading application, since inference runs well on previous generation cards.
The resale chain is already scaling. Sims Lifecycle Services grew sales by 77.4% in the year to June 2026, and Iron Mountain management said on its Q2 2026 call that asset lifecycle management revenue grew 88%. The loop between new hardware, retirement and resale is now a business of its own.

Challenges: Price Erosion, Provenance, Export Controls and Power
Prices move fast. Silicon Data tracks the median H100 rental price at hyperscalers falling from USD 8.96 per GPU hour in January to May 2025 to USD 6.26 in July to December. A buyer who pays for a used card is exposed to the same curve, which is why the report lists price erosion at each new architecture launch and residual value uncertainty among the main restraints. A late October podcast from Data Center Frontier makes the same point, with a refurbisher advising operators not to assume current H100 prices will last.
Provenance and warranty carry a price. NVIDIA notes in its annual filing that resold products may reach the unauthorized gray market and compete with new product. Quoted asks reflect the risk. The Compute Exchange lists refurbished H100 PCIe cards at USD 19,000 to 23,000, and that range includes a supplier warranty premium of about 15%. These are asking prices, not completed transactions.
Export controls follow the hardware. US authorities charged three more people on 26 March 2026 over a conspiracy to export servers with controlled NVIDIA GPUs to China. Law firm guidance notes that the controls attach to the items themselves, including re-exports, and that a buyer who knowingly acquires GPUs exported without a licence risks a violation. Our reading is that age and condition do not lift the controls, so resellers need documented chains of custody.
Newer systems need new facilities. The GB200 NVL72 rack needs 120 kW of cooling capacity and direct liquid cooling. As resale moves from PCIe cards to rack-scale systems, power and cooling become part of the buying decision.
Opportunities in Refurbishment, Exchanges, Financing and Sovereign AI
Certified refurbishment and grading. Buyers pay for trust. SK tes runs 40 or more facilities in 22 countries, and the report highlights certified testing and grading programmes as an opportunity that providers can turn into a premium service.
Exchanges and price discovery. The Compute Exchange opened a used and refurbished marketplace for H100 and A100 GPUs on 17 July 2026. CME Group and Silicon Data also scheduled H100 and B200 rental index futures to begin trading on 5 October 2026, subject to regulatory review. A visible price curve makes it easier to value an older GPU.
GPU-backed financing. Lenders are starting to treat GPUs as collateral. CoreWeave closed an USD 8.5 billion facility rated A3 by Moody's on 31 March 2026, described as the first investment grade financing secured by HPC infrastructure, and Lambda closed a USD 926 million term loan secured by GPU servers on 27 August 2026. Reliable residual values are what make this lending work.
Sovereign and emerging market buyers. India has made more than 38,000 GPUs available under the IndiaAI Mission, and Canada has committed CAD 2 billion to a sovereign compute strategy. Programmes like these want capacity quickly and on a budget, which suits previous generation hardware. That fits the Middle East and Africa being the fastest growing region in the resale report.
What This Means for Buyers, Sellers and Investors
Buyers should match the GPU generation to the workload. Inference and fine-tuning run well on Ampere and Hopper, and a warranty, a test report and a documented chain of custody are worth paying for. Rack-scale systems also need power and cooling that the building may not have.
Sellers and ITAD providers should plan the afterlife of a GPU before it is installed. Grading, data sanitisation and export compliance are what separate a premium resale from a discount one.
Investors and lenders should note that operators do not agree on how long servers last. Amazon shortened a subset of its servers from 6 to 5 years, while Nebius moved from 4 to 5 years in 2026. Residual value assumptions drive both the resale market and the loans written against it.
