Segments covered: grade, source, form, end product, application.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by expanding silicon ingot and wafer production for semiconductors, long-term supply agreements with solar photovoltaic manufacturers, and the build-out of polysilicon, ingot, and wafer capacity in new regions. However, the extreme geographic concentration of supply and its exposure to disruption, overcapacity and price collapse in the solar supply chain, high technical and capital barriers to new supply, and restrictions on quartz ore mining restrain the growth of this market.

Furthermore, capacity expansion at established deposits, the development of new quartz sources, and the localization of semiconductor-grade quartz production are expected to offer growth opportunities for the stakeholders in this market. However, qualifying new deposits to semiconductor-grade purity remains a major challenge impacting the growth of this market. Additionally, long-term contracts with customer prepayments, investment in supply chain resilience, and the substitution of imported quartz with domestic supply in China are prominent trends in this market.

The High-Purity Quartz Market comprises quartz and silica with silicon dioxide content typically of 99.99% or higher and very low levels of metallic and alkali impurities, processed into sand, granules, lumps, and powder for high-technology applications. High-purity quartz is the essential raw material for fused quartz crucibles in which polysilicon is melted to grow single-crystal silicon ingots by the Czochralski process for semiconductor and solar wafers, and for quartz tubes, rods, and components used in semiconductor fabrication, solar cell processing, optical fiber production, lighting, and optics. The market covers natural high-purity quartz from pegmatite and vein deposits and synthetic high-purity silica. Downstream finished quartz glass products are analyzed as end-product categories, while value is measured at the high-purity quartz material level. The market ecosystem extends from mining and processing companies to crucible and quartz glass manufacturers, polysilicon and wafer producers, semiconductor and solar manufacturers, and optical fiber producers.

Supply of the highest grades is concentrated in a small number of locations. The Spruce Pine district in North Carolina, where Belgium-based Sibelco and Norway's The Quartz Corp operate mines and processing plants, is the world's leading source of natural high-purity quartz. Both companies suspended operations on 26 September 2024 ahead of Hurricane Helene, which severed roads and rail lines and cut power and communications across the region. Sibelco reported only minor damage, restarted production and shipments on 10 October 2024, and ramped progressively to full capacity, while The Quartz Corp indicated that damage was concentrated in ancillary units and that feedstock inventories held since the pandemic would help avoid major supply disruptions. The episode highlighted the vulnerability of the semiconductor and solar supply chains to a single region.

Demand is growing with silicon ingot production. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, increased global manufacturing of silicon ingots for photovoltaic and semiconductor wafers has increased demand for high-purity quartz for fused quartz crucibles, while growth in electronics, fiber optics, and specialty glass is sustaining demand. The USGS estimates that ground high-purity quartz sold or used in the U.S. rose from about 100,000 tonnes in 2020 and 2021 to about 200,000 tonnes a year in 2022 to 2024, with prices ranging from USD 500 to USD 20,000 per tonne depending on grade. Sibelco increased its high-purity quartz production by more than 70% between 2019 and 2023 and is investing USD 200 million to double installed capacity at Spruce Pine, with a second expansion of around USD 500 million planned over 2024 to 2027 to serve long-term solar agreements that include customer prepayments.

The solar segment has experienced a sharp cycle. After a period of shortage and high prices, Chinese prices of inner-layer high-purity quartz sand for solar crucibles, which stood at around CNY 410,000 per tonne in the first quarter of 2024, roughly halved during 2024 as solar demand weakened and crucible makers reduced purchases, and Chinese crucible makers were negotiating lower prices for imported sand in mid-2025. At the same time, China's leading domestic producer, Jiangsu Pacific Quartz, has invested in capacity for 60,000 tonnes of high-purity quartz sand, 150,000 tonnes of semiconductor-grade quartz sand, and 5,800 tonnes of semiconductor-grade quartz products under a CNY 3.2 billion expansion plan announced in 2022.

Market dynamics

16 factors across 5 forces
01

Expanding Silicon Ingot and Wafer Production for Semiconductors

Expanding silicon ingot and wafer production for semiconductors is a major factor driving the High-Purity Quartz Market. Every single-crystal silicon ingot is grown in a fused quartz crucible made from high-purity quartz, and semiconductor fabs consume quartz tubes, rings, and components in diffusion, oxidation, and etch processes. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, increased global manufacturing of silicon ingots for semiconductor and photovoltaic wafers has increased demand for high-purity quartz for crucibles, and ground high-purity quartz sold or used in the U.S. doubled from about 100,000 tonnes in 2020 to about 200,000 tonnes a year in 2022 to 2024. Rising wafer demand for AI accelerators, high-bandwidth memory, and advanced logic is expected to sustain growth in semiconductor-grade quartz consumption.

02

Long-Term Supply Agreements with Solar Photovoltaic Manufacturers

Long-term supply agreements with solar photovoltaic manufacturers are significantly supporting investment in high-purity quartz supply. Sibelco reported that demand for its IOTA high-purity quartz is confirmed under long-term sales agreements that include prepayments from customers in the global solar photovoltaic market, and that it increased high-purity quartz production by more than 70% between 2019 and 2023. These agreements led Sibelco to plan a second expansion at Spruce Pine of around USD 500 million over 2024 to 2027, larger than its USD 200 million first expansion. Solar ingot growers require large volumes of crucibles, making the solar sector the largest consumer of high-purity quartz by volume.

03

Build-Out of Polysilicon, Ingot, and Wafer Capacity in New Regions

The build-out of polysilicon, ingot, and wafer capacity in new regions is creating new demand centers for high-purity quartz. In Saudi Arabia, the Public Investment Fund signed agreements in 2024 for a 20 GW ingot and wafer factory with TCL Zhonghuan, estimated at around USD 2.08 billion, and a 10 GW solar cell and module factory with JinkoSolar, as the country targets localizing 75% of renewable energy components by 2030. In Oman, United Solar Polysilicon is building a polysilicon plant in Sohar with initial output of 50,000 tonnes a year, rising to 100,000 tonnes a year, with trial production scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025. Each new ingot facility requires a continuous supply of quartz crucibles and therefore high-purity quartz.

Expert perspectives

The High-Purity Quartz Market is small in value but strategically outsized. Every silicon ingot, and therefore every chip and most solar panels, depends on crucibles made from quartz that comes predominantly from one district in North Carolina. Hurricane Helene's shutdown of both Spruce Pine producers in September 2024 made that dependence visible, even as supply recovered quickly.

Three structural changes are expected to shape the market through 2036. First, supply will expand at proven deposits, with Sibelco investing USD 200 million and a further USD 500 million at Spruce Pine, financed by long-term contracts and prepayments. Second, the solar segment will remain volatile, as the halving of Chinese crucible sand prices in 2024 demonstrated, while the semiconductor segment grows more steadily with AI-driven wafer demand. Third, new demand centers in the Middle East and new supply sources in China, Brazil, and elsewhere will gradually diversify the market.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in semiconductor-grade quartz and quartz glassware, long-term supply to new ingot and wafer projects, processing technology, and the qualification of new deposits. The principal risks are supply disruption, solar price cycles, and the difficulty of reaching semiconductor-grade purity from new sources.
