Segments covered: component, transformer type, sales channel, end user.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by grid expansion and the replacement of aging transformer fleets, renewable energy and HVDC interconnection build-out, data center and electrification-driven power demand, and the global expansion of transformer manufacturing capacity. However, volatility in copper, electrical steel, and aluminium prices and long qualification and type-testing cycles for new suppliers restrain the growth of this market.

Furthermore, the shift toward ester insulating fluids, online monitoring and digitalization of transformer fleets, and supply chain localization and domestic content policies are expected to offer growth opportunities for the stakeholders in this market. However, capacity bottlenecks in high-voltage bushings and tap changers and skilled labor shortages in component manufacturing remain major challenges impacting the growth of this market. Additionally, dry-type (RIP/RIS) bushings replacing oil-impregnated designs, vacuum on-load tap changers, and amorphous and high-efficiency core designs are prominent trends in this market.

The Transformer Components Market comprises merchant sales of bushings, tap changers, insulation materials, winding conductors, cores, cooling equipment, and protection, monitoring, and accessory devices to transformer manufacturers for new transformers (OEM channel) and to utilities, asset owners, and service companies for replacement, refurbishment, and retrofit (aftermarket). The market is measured as the revenue of component manufacturers, including the component businesses of integrated groups, and covers power, distribution, and specialty transformers. Components produced for in-house use inside transformer factories, such as in-house core cutting and coil winding, are excluded, while winding conductors are valued including their metal content.

Transformer components now set the pace at which transformer makers can deliver. Demand has risen sharply with grid expansion, renewable energy connections, data centers, and the replacement of aging fleets, while bushings, tap changers, and insulation are supplied by a limited number of qualified suppliers that were sized for the slower grid investment of the 2010s. Rystad Energy estimated global transformer manufacturing capacity at 4,700 GVA in 2025, with almost 200 GVA being added in 2026, and every new transformer plant creates recurring demand for components.

Winding conductors remain the largest component because copper makes up most of their value, but protection, monitoring, and accessories, cores, insulation materials, and bushings grow faster than the market. Ester fluids, dry-type bushings, vacuum tap changers, amorphous cores, and online monitoring gain share because they improve safety, efficiency, or reliability, and the aftermarket grows faster than the OEM channel as utilities extend the life of aging transformers.

Copper and electrical steel prices are volatile, and new suppliers face long qualification and type-testing cycles before transformer makers and utilities approve their products. High-voltage bushings and on-load tap changers remain build-schedule bottlenecks, and component plants face shortages of skilled labor. The forecast therefore assumes that capacity additions announced by leading suppliers come online gradually through 2028, and that copper prices stay at 2026 levels in nominal terms.

Market dynamics

13 factors across 4 forces
01

Grid Expansion and Replacement of Aging Transformer Fleets

Grid expansion and the replacement of aging fleets are the most important factors driving the Transformer Components Market. The IEA estimates that the world needs to add or replace 80 million km of power lines by 2040 and that grid investment must double to more than USD 600 billion a year by 2030. In the U.S., NREL estimates that about 55% of the 60 to 80 million distribution transformers in service are at least 33 years old, and State Grid Corporation of China plans CNY 4 trillion of grid investment for 2026 to 2030. Every new substation and replaced transformer requires a full set of components, while aging fleets generate aftermarket demand for replacement bushings, tap changer overhauls, and monitoring retrofits.

02

Renewable Energy and HVDC Interconnection Build-Out

Renewable plants are often located far from demand centers, which requires new transmission lines, step-up transformers, and substations. The IEA expects 4,600 GW of renewable capacity to be added worldwide in 2025 to 2030, and TenneT signed contracts worth about EUR 30 billion for 14 offshore HVDC grid connections of 2 GW each. Each HVDC converter station needs large converter transformers with specialized bushings, tap changers, and insulation, which concentrates demand on the most demanding and highest-value components.

03

Data Center and Electrification-Driven Power Demand

Data centers, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and industrial electrification are raising electricity demand after a long period of flat consumption in many developed countries. The IEA estimates that data center electricity use will more than double from about 415 TWh in 2024 to about 945 TWh by 2030, and that about 20% of planned data center projects could face delays because of grid constraints. Data center campuses need dedicated high-voltage substations and many distribution transformers, and operators are securing supply directly, as shown by the bushing capacity agreement between Trench Group and Meta in September 2026.

04

Global Expansion of Transformer Manufacturing Capacity

Every new transformer factory creates recurring demand for components. Hitachi Energy announced a USD 6 billion investment program in 2024, followed by USD 250 million in March 2025 for bushings, tap changers, insulation, and accessories, and Wood Mackenzie reported USD 1.8 billion of announced North American transformer capacity expansions since 2023. New plants of Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, HD Hyundai Electric, and others in the U.S., Europe, India, and South Korea also localize component purchasing, which favors suppliers with nearby production.

  • However, the Aftermarket segment is projected to register the higher CAGR of 8.2% during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is driven by aging transformer fleets, the shortage of new transformers, and the adoption of monitoring, retrofit, and ester retrofilling solutions.
  • Utilities increasingly extend the life of existing transformers through replacement bushings, tap changer overhauls, oil treatment, and online monitoring.
04

By End User

  • The Utilities segment is expected to account for the largest share of 48.9% of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the ownership by utilities and transmission system operators of most transformers in power grids, from large transmission units to millions of distribution transformers, and to their large grid investment programs in the U.S., China, Europe, and India.
  • However, the Data Centers & Commercial segment is projected to register the highest CAGR of 11.9% during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is driven by the rapid growth of data center electricity demand, which requires dedicated high-voltage substations, large power transformers, and many distribution transformers, and by the preference of operators for premium components, such as dry-type bushings, ester fluids, and online monitoring.

Expert perspectives

Transformer components have moved from a quiet supply market to a strategic bottleneck of the energy transition. Grid expansion, renewable connections, data centers, and aging fleets have raised demand faster than suppliers of bushings, tap changers, and insulation could add capacity, and buyers now secure components through long-term agreements, capacity reservations, and acquisitions.

Three structural shifts are expected to shape the market through 2036. First, supply is localizing, with new component plants in the U.S., India, the Middle East, and Europe built next to new transformer factories. Second, the component mix is shifting toward dry-type bushings, vacuum tap changers, ester fluids, amorphous cores, and online monitoring, which raises value per transformer. Third, transformer makers and grid equipment groups are integrating backward into components, while specialists defend their positions through capacity, delivery speed, and technology.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in dry-type high-voltage bushings, vacuum on-load tap changers, ester fluids, amorphous and wound cores, and online monitoring, particularly in North America, India, and the Middle East. The principal risks are copper and electrical steel price volatility, long qualification cycles, labor shortages, and trade policy changes.
