Segments covered: product type, technology, application, data center type.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by synchronized GPU load swings in AI training clusters requiring millisecond power buffering, grid connection constraints and stricter grid codes for large data center loads, and the shift from lead-acid to long-life, low-maintenance ride-through storage in UPS systems. However, low energy density, which limits supercapacitors to short-duration events, and higher upfront cost per kWh than lithium-ion battery backup units (BBUs) restrain market growth.

Furthermore, the integration of capacitive energy storage into rack power shelves for ORv3 and 800 VDC architectures, supercapacitor support for on-site fuel cell and gas engine power at AI campuses, and the replacement of dummy-load power smoothing to recover compute capacity are expected to offer growth opportunities for the stakeholders in this market. However, cell aging under high-temperature, high-cycle AI duty profiles and the lack of standard specifications for power smoothing performance across server platforms remain major challenges. Additionally, lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) and hybrid supercapacitors, graphene and advanced carbon electrodes, and AI-based control of hybrid battery–supercapacitor architectures are prominent trends in this market.

The Supercapacitors for Data Centers Market covers sales of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), and battery–supercapacitor hybrid products used in data centers. These include cells and the modules, rack shelves, UPS cabinets, and facility-scale systems built from them. Each product is counted once, at the most integrated level that is still a supercapacitor product. Market value is measured at the selling price of the product and assigned to the country of purchase. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, lithium-ion BBUs, flywheels, and the value of the server, PSU, UPS, or rack into which a product is built are excluded.

Demand comes from two very different sources. The older source is hold-up and backup in server power supplies, solid-state drives (SSDs), RAID controllers, and UPS systems, which grows with the installed base of IT equipment. The newer and faster source is buffering the synchronized power swings of AI training clusters before they reach the grid, on-site generators, or fuel cells. According to the NVIDIA Technical Blog of October 2025, rack power can swing from about 30% to 100% and back within milliseconds. Since 2024, this need has moved supercapacitors from a board-level component into rack shelves, UPS cabinets, and facility-scale systems.

The purchase-country basis shapes the geographic picture of this market. Cells for server power supplies and storage trays are bought by power supply makers and server assemblers in Taiwan, China, and Mexico. Most of the racks they build, however, are installed in the U.S. Mexico supplied 34.5% of U.S. server imports in the first half of 2026, according to Banamex data reported by Mexico News Daily. Rack shelves, UPS cabinets, and facility smoothing systems are bought where operators build, so their demand follows grid pressure and AI campus construction in each country.

Competition is fragmented, and the six largest players are estimated to hold less than half of the market in 2025. Power shelf and power system makers such as Delta Electronics, Flex, Eaton, and Siemens Energy build capacitive storage into rack, UPS, and facility power systems. Cell and module specialists such as Musashi Energy Solutions, Skeleton Technologies, VINATech, and LS Materials increasingly sell their own systems. Supply has been tight since the GB200 and GB300 ramp, and Commercial Times reported in February 2025 that supercapacitor shortages were the biggest passive component obstacle to GB300 adoption.

“Our training clusters swing from idle to full power in milliseconds, and the utility now asks how we will ride through faults and limit oscillations. We use firmware smoothing today, but power floors waste energy we would rather spend on compute. Rack storage is now part of how we plan each new GPU generation.”

This reflects why AI load power smoothing & peak shaving is the largest application. It also shows how grid rules such as ERCOT NOGRR 282 support demand for rack shelves and facility systems.

“Whether a rack ships with a capacitor shelf depends on the customer and the power shelf design, not on us. The number of qualified LIC suppliers is still small, so we qualify cells early and lock in supply before each platform freezes.”

This highlights the platform dependence of shelf demand and the tight supply of qualified LIC cells, which explains the strong position of Musashi and the growing role of LICs.

VP of Engineering, On-Site Power Provider for AI Campuses, U.S.

“Our fuel cells cannot follow a GPU load step on their own, so supercapacitors carry the first seconds while output adjusts. Cycle life matters more than energy, because the storage works every second of the day.”

This reflects the step change in on-site generation transient support in 2026 and the large supply contracts won by VINATech and LS Materials.

“Battery strings are our main UPS maintenance burden, and the new connection policy pushes us to add on-site storage anyway. Supercapacitor modules with a 20-year rating fit sites with fast-starting generators, but we still pay a premium per kWh.”

This indicates how battery replacement and grid rules support UPS supercapacitor cabinets, while higher upfront cost per kWh restrains wider adoption.

Market dynamics

13 factors across 5 forces
01

Synchronized GPU Load Swings in AI Training Clusters Requiring Millisecond Power Buffering

Large AI training jobs make thousands of GPUs compute and communicate in lockstep, so their combined power draw rises and falls together. According to the NVIDIA Technical Blog of October 2025, rack power can swing from about 30% at idle to 100% and back within milliseconds. A joint Microsoft, OpenAI, and NVIDIA paper on arXiv in August 2025 found that these swings can reach tens or hundreds of megawatts across a campus. Their oscillation energy sits between 0.2 Hz and 3 Hz, which can excite mechanical modes in nearby turbine generators. The same paper found that a 90% GPU power floor cost 10.5% extra energy in simulation, and it recommended rack-level storage combined with GPU smoothing. According to Electronic Design in October 2025, the Vera Rubin NVL144 rack carries 20 times the energy storage of the prior generation. Rack-level buffering is therefore moving from an optional feature to a planned part of the AI rack power budget.

02

Grid Connection Constraints and Stricter Grid Codes for Large Data Center Loads

Data center electricity use rose 17% in 2025, to about 485 TWh, according to the IEA update of April 2026. On 10 July 2024, a fault on a 230 kV line in Northern Virginia caused about 60 sites with about 1,500 MW of load to switch to backup power. According to DCD, which reported the NERC incident review, many of these sites did not return to the grid automatically. An ERCOT Board memo of December 2025 counted 26 events between 2023 and 2025 in which large computational loads tripped during routine voltage disturbances. ERCOT NOGRR 282 took effect on 1 August 2026 and requires large electronic loads to return to 90% of pre-fault demand within 2 seconds. NERC issued a Level 3 alert on large loads in 2026, its highest severity, according to Morgan Lewis. In Ireland, the CRU policy of December 2025 requires new data centers of 1 MVA or more to provide dispatchable on-site or nearby generation or storage. Ride-through windows are measured in fractions of a second, which suits supercapacitors that can recharge quickly for the next event.

03

Shift from Lead-Acid to Long-Life, Low-Maintenance Ride-Through Storage in UPS Systems

According to the Uptime Institute 2025 outage analysis, power caused 54% of impactful outages, and UPS failure was the top power-related cause, at 42%. Eaton states in its XLM data center brochure that batteries remain "the number one component identified as a cause for UPS downtime". Its XLM module uses 23 EDLC cells, is rated for up to 20 years, and operates from −40 °C to +85 °C. IEEE Spectrum reported in May 2025 rated lives of 12 to 20 years for the E-STATCOM of Siemens Energy and up to 20 years for the XLHV modules of Eaton. By contrast, an ORv3 lithium-ion BBU reference design published by Analog Devices in December 2023 specifies pack capacity over four years, with a state-of-health test every 90 days. AI loads add a further reason to protect batteries, as Vertiv added a "Battery Shield" function to its PowerUPS 9000 to limit battery micro-cycling under AI load steps. Supercapacitors absorb these cycles directly, because their rated cycle life runs into the hundreds of thousands or millions.

Expert perspectives

Supercapacitors in data centers are moving from a board-level component to a planned layer of AI rack and campus power design. Rack shelves are projected to raise their share from 31.0% in 2026 to 38.0% in 2036, and AI load power smoothing & peak shaving from 38.1% to 49.8%. Board-level hold-up remains a steady base, but it grows with server shipments rather than with AI power density. North America is projected to raise its share from 41.7% to 45.1%, while the share of Asia-Pacific falls from 40.1% to 36.5% as assembly spreads.

The forecast depends heavily on platform choices made by a few companies. NVIDIA stores energy for the GB300 NVL72 power shelf in electrolytic capacitors, so separate capacitor shelves remain optional on that platform. In a bear case, slower AI spending and wider use of electrolytic capacitors, lithium-ion BBUs, or GPU software smoothing would hold the market to about USD 2,084.1 million by 2036. In a bull case, capacitive storage becomes standard in AI rack reference designs and 800 VDC arrives sooner, lifting the market to about USD 3,517.7 million. Rack shelves carry most of the gap between the cases.

Fuel cell and gas engine support is the most defensible application today, and it explains the large 2026 contracts of VINATech and LS Materials. This demand is concentrated in a few U.S. fuel cell customers, so supplier revenue can swing with their build-out plans. Supply of large-format LIC cells and qualified rack shelves is expected to remain tight through 2027 and to ease from 2028 as new lines in Japan, Vietnam, and China ramp.

For suppliers, the strongest positions are likely to be in integrated cell-to-shelf offerings qualified for Vera Rubin and 800 VDC racks. Long-life cells with proven field data and facility systems with grid compliance records are also well placed. The main risks are software and electrolytic substitutes, lithium-ion BBUs, customer concentration, and price pressure as Chinese EDLC and LIC capacity scales.
