Scope note

Segments covered: product type, input type, output configuration, rack capacity, redundancy, energy storage integration.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by the volume of power shelf hardware a megawatt-scale rack requires, which at prevailing shelf ratings cannot be accommodated within the compute rack itself; the rack units released to compute when the power system is moved into an adjacent structure; the capacity lost to redundancy, which raises the hardware count above the arithmetic of the load; and an open rack specification that defines the disaggregated power rack and allows an operator to source it from more than one manufacturer.

In addition, the integration of battery backup within the same structure, the adoption of Ethernet-based management and telemetry across power shelves, and the ability of a sidecar to raise the density of an existing hall without a facility redesign are further supporting the growth of this market. The transition from the alternating current input and 54 volt output shelves now shipping toward an 800 volt direct current architecture is under way rather than complete, and the growth rate in this report reflects that sequence.

The 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market comprises the rack-form-factor power systems that supply an information technology rack from a position outside it. The market includes sidecar power racks standing alongside the compute rack, integrated power racks combining power and compute in one frame, the power shelves and hot-swappable power supply modules they contain, the busbar and backplane distributing output within the structure, the battery backup units and energy storage integrated into the same frame where provided, and the controllers, telemetry and management interfaces through which the system is monitored. The market ecosystem extends from power module and magnetics suppliers through power shelf manufacturers, original design manufacturers and data center power system companies to hyperscale and colocation operators, the compute platform vendors whose rack architecture determines the output configuration, the open specification bodies defining the mechanical and electrical envelope, and the certification authorities whose listings determine what may be installed.

The reason this market exists is a simple volume calculation that the compute rack cannot absorb. The same shelf carries six hot-swappable 5.5 kW power supply modules in a one Open Rack Unit form factor, delivers 33 kW fully populated without redundancy and 27.5 kW with N plus one power module redundancy, can be operated in parallel for racks requiring 100 kW or more in AI and high performance computing applications, and is fitted with an Ethernet-based controller compatible with DMTF Redfish, the family having been available since 2023. A shelf delivering 33 kW fully populated means that a 1 MW rack requires approximately 30 shelves, and the one Open Rack Unit form factor of each shelf makes clear that a power system of that size cannot sit within the same frame as the compute it serves.

Redundancy raises that count further and the penalty is quantified rather than estimated. Operating the same shelf at N plus one power module redundancy reduces its output from 33 kW to 27.5 kW, a loss of 16.7% of capacity, so a 1 MW rack served on that basis requires approximately 37 shelves rather than 30. Hardware volume in this market is therefore set by the redundancy policy as much as by the load, which is why redundancy configuration is treated as a segmentation dimension rather than as an installation detail.

Moving that hardware out of the compute rack is the purpose of the sidecar, and the benefit is expressed in space. Vertiv describes an 800 volt direct current sidecar architecture that moves conversion out of the rack and into the pod, returning 8 to 16 rack units to compute, and states that adding a sidecar allows existing alternating current racks and upstream alternating current infrastructure to support higher densities without redesigning the facility. Returning 8 to 16 rack units to compute converts structure that was carrying power equipment into capacity that earns revenue, within a frame whose footprint and cooling have already been provided.

The direction of rack power gives the requirement its urgency. According to the same company, AI clusters today reach 140 kW per rack, 240 kW is imminent and 600 kW is on the horizon, while traditional alternating current power delivery begins to break down somewhere between 350 kW and 400 kW because connectors, busbars and copper volumes cannot keep pace. A trajectory from current levels toward and beyond the point at which conventional delivery fails means that each step in density requires more power hardware than the previous one, and at some point in that progression the power system has to occupy a structure of its own.

The most recent product introduction in this category, however, went in the opposite direction from the architecture this market is named for. At the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit, announced on 19 October 2026, Advanced Energy Industries introduced a single-whip alternating current input option for its 33 kW Open Rack v3 High-Power Rack power shelf, providing one alternating current power connection per shelf with separate left-side and right-side input configurations. A shelf launched at the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit with a new alternating current input option, in a family available since 2023, indicates that the installed and currently shipping base is alternating current fed rather than 800 volt direct current fed, and that the 800 volt sidecar is the successor to this product rather than its present form.

The output side is in the same position. In the 800 volt direct current architecture published by NVIDIA on 20 May 2025, legacy 54 volt direct current distribution is stated to reach its physical limits as racks exceed 200 kW, the architecture supports racks from 100 kW to more than 1 MW, 1 MW information technology racks are planned from 2027, an 800 volt sidecar powering 576 Rubin Ultra graphics processing units in a single Kyber rack was shown at GTC 2025, and the GB200 NVL72 and GB300 NVL72 systems in production use 54 volt direct current power shelves. Rack-scale systems in production using 54 volt direct current power shelves, with full-scale 800 volt production coinciding with a platform arriving in 2027, places the current market in alternating current input and 54 volt output hardware and the forecast growth in the architecture that displaces it. An assessment that treats this market as already 800 volt direct current will misread both its present composition and the nature of the transition ahead.

The mechanical and electrical envelope of the successor product has been defined collectively rather than by competing proprietary designs. At the inaugural Open Compute Project APAC Summit in Taipei on 5 August 2025, the Mt Diablo specification, also designated Diablo 400 and co-authored by Microsoft, Meta and Google, was contributed at version 0.5, targeting information technology racks scaling from 100 kW to 1 MW, using an Open Rack v3 based disaggregated power rack also described as a sidecar rack, and moving power delivery from 48 volt direct current to plus and minus 400 volt direct current, with 400 volt direct current chosen partly to reuse the electric vehicle supply chain. An Open Rack v3 based disaggregated power rack co-authored by three of the largest operators of data center capacity establishes the frame, mounting and interface set, which allows an operator to qualify once and source from more than one manufacturer, and allows a manufacturer to build to a known specification rather than to each customer.

Management has become a specification point in its own right. An Ethernet-based controller compatible with DMTF Redfish in a 33 kW shelf indicates that power hardware is now expected to present the same management interface as the compute it serves, reporting module status, load, temperature and alarms into the facility and orchestration systems. For an operator running thirty or more shelves per rack, the ability to interrogate and manage them as a fleet rather than individually is a condition of operation rather than a convenience.

The market includes power shelf manufacturers, data center power system companies, original design manufacturers and component suppliers, among them Advanced Energy Industries, Delta Electronics, Vertiv, Lite-On Technology, Murata Manufacturing, Flex, Wiwynn, Quanta Cloud Technology, Foxconn Industrial Internet, Megmeet Electrical, Eaton, Schneider Electric, ABB, Legrand, Bel Fuse, Artesyn, Infineon Technologies and Navitas Semiconductor. Participants compete on power density per Open Rack Unit, efficiency across the load range, hot-swap and serviceability with adjacent modules live, conformance with the open rack specification, management and telemetry capability, redundancy behaviour and fault containment, integration of battery backup within the frame, and delivery lead time against a build or upgrade programme.

At the same time, the market faces challenges, including the capacity lost to redundancy, which raises hardware count and cost above the load; heat removal from a structure carrying several hundred kilowatts of conversion in a confined frame; the coexistence of alternating current input and 800 volt direct current input products in the same portfolio through a multi-year transition; commoditisation of the frame by an open specification, which compresses margin on structure while raising it on modules and management; and the dependence of demand on a compute platform transition occurring on schedule. As a result, suppliers combining high power density per rack unit, proven hot-swap serviceability, specification conformance and credible management capability are expected to capture the largest share of growth over the forecast period.

Market dynamics

15 factors across 5 forces
01

Power Shelf Volume Required by Megawatt-Scale Racks

The power shelf volume required by megawatt-scale racks is a major factor driving the 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market, because it is the arithmetic that forces the power system out of the compute rack.

The calculation is unambiguous. A 1 MW rack served by 33 kW shelves requires approximately 30 of them, each occupying one Open Rack Unit, and the structure, cooling and service access for that quantity of hardware cannot be found inside a frame whose purpose is to hold compute. The sidecar is the consequence of that constraint rather than a design preference, which is why this market grows directly with the density of the racks it serves.

02

Rack Units Returned to Compute

Rack units returned to compute are significantly driving market growth, and this is the argument that reaches the budget holder.

The value of the released space is set by what occupies it. Rack units converted from power equipment to accelerated computing hardware are valued at the margin that compute generates, within a frame whose footprint, structure and cooling have already been paid for, so the case for a sidecar is made on revenue capacity rather than on electrical performance. In a facility where compute hardware is the scarce resource, that conversion is the strongest argument available for this product.

03

Capacity Lost to Redundancy Raising Hardware Count

Capacity lost to redundancy raising hardware count is an important driver because it increases the volume of hardware a given load requires. Operating a 33 kW shelf at N plus one power module redundancy reduces its output to 27.5 kW, a loss of 16.7%, so a 1 MW rack requires approximately 37 shelves on that basis rather than 30.

The effect compounds with the redundancy policy an operator adopts. Where availability requirements justify N plus N rather than N plus one, hardware count approximately doubles against the load, and because each shelf carries its own modules, controller and management interface, the whole content of the market scales with that decision. Redundancy is therefore a demand multiplier in this market in a way that it is not in the distribution equipment upstream.

04

Open Rack Specification Defining the Disaggregated Power Rack

An open rack specification defining the disaggregated power rack supports market growth by settling the envelope and removing a procurement obstacle.

A standardised frame, mounting arrangement and interface set allows an operator to qualify a form factor once and source it from several manufacturers, which reduces supply risk on a component now central to facility capacity, and it allows a manufacturer to build to a published specification rather than to each customer design. Co-authorship by three of the largest operators of data center capacity also places demand behind the specification rather than describing an aspiration.

By Input Type

  • 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market Analysis by Input Type
  • The Alternating Current Input segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the installed and currently shipping base, with a 33 kW Open Rack v3 High-Power Rack shelf family available since 2023 and a single-whip alternating current input option introduced at the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit providing one alternating current connection per shelf.
  • However, the 800 Volt Direct Current Input segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to the removal of a conversion stage and of the alternating current distribution behind the rack, to alignment with facility-level conversion rather than duplication of it, and to full-scale 800 volt production coinciding with rack-scale systems arriving in 2027.
  • The Plus and Minus 400 Volt Direct Current Input segment is expected to grow in parallel where the split bus specification is adopted.
03

By Output Configuration

  • The 54 Volt Direct Current Output segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the rack-scale systems in production, which use 54 volt direct current power shelves, and to the installed base of compute hardware designed around that rail.
  • However, the Plus and Minus 400 Volt Direct Current Output segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to its definition within the specification that moves power delivery from 48 volt direct current to plus and minus 400 volt direct current, to the reuse of components qualified at 400 volts for electric vehicle service, and to the physical limits reached by low-voltage distribution as racks exceed 200 kW.
  • Other Rail Configurations are expected to grow where platform-specific rails are required.
04

By Rack Capacity

  • 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market Analysis by Rack Capacity
  • The 100 kW to 500 kW segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to its alignment with the densities now being served, with AI clusters reaching 140 kW per rack and 240 kW described as imminent, and to the practicality of operating shelves in parallel for racks requiring 100 kW or more.
  • However, the Above 500 kW segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to 600 kW per rack being described as on the horizon, to 1 MW racks planned from 2027, and to the hardware volume those densities require, since a megawatt rack served by 33 kW shelves needs approximately 30 of them and approximately 37 at N plus one redundancy.
  • The Up to 100 kW segment is expected to grow more slowly, serving enterprise and edge deployments.
05

By Redundancy Configuration

  • 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market Analysis by Redundancy Configuration
  • The N Plus One segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to its position as the standard configuration for power module redundancy within a shelf, under which a 33 kW shelf delivers 27.5 kW, and to the balance it provides between availability and the 16.7% of capacity it consumes.
  • However, the N Plus N segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to the availability requirements attached to training and inference workloads whose interruption is costly, to the concentration of load that megawatt racks create, and to the approximate doubling of hardware against the load that this configuration implies, which raises the content of each deployment.
  • The No Redundancy segment is expected to remain limited to applications where interruption is tolerable.
06

By Energy Storage Integration

  • 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market Analysis by Energy Storage Integration
  • The Without Integrated Storage segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the provision of ride-through from central uninterruptible power supply plant in most facilities, and to the space within a power rack being allocated to shelves where hardware count is already high.
  • However, the With Integrated Battery Backup segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to the placement of ride-through capability immediately behind the load, which removes the distribution and protection required to bring it from a central plant, to the sizing of storage to the rack rather than to the hall, and to the recurring replacement revenue that storage within the frame generates.
  • Integration also allows storage, protection and management to be coordinated by the manufacturer rather than by the operator.

Geographic analysis

01

North America

Largest share

In 2026, North America is expected to account for the largest share of the global 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market. The large share of this region is mainly attributed to the concentration of accelerated computing capacity under construction and of existing halls being upgraded, the location of the compute platform vendor and of the operators that co-authored the open rack specification, the prevalence of self-build facilities able to adopt an unproven power architecture, and the presence of Advanced Energy Industries, Vertiv, Bel Fuse and Artesyn alongside the North American operations of Eaton, Schneider Electric and ABB.

02

Asia-Pacific

Fastest growth

Asia-Pacific is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The growth of this region is driven by power shelf and rack manufacture in Taiwan, China and Japan, which places suppliers inside the compute hardware supply chain rather than beside it, by domestic accelerated computing build programmes, and by the presence of Delta Electronics, Lite-On Technology, Murata Manufacturing, Wiwynn, Quanta Cloud Technology, Foxconn Industrial Internet and Megmeet Electrical.

03

Europe

Europe is expected to account for a smaller share of the market while growing, supported by the presence of the electrical equipment and power system manufacturers that serve the architecture, namely Schneider Electric, ABB, Legrand, Infineon Technologies and the European operations of Flex, and by a substantial base of existing halls suited to density upgrade, and constrained by grid connection timelines and power availability that limit new campus construction in the region. The Rest of the World is expected to account for a limited share of the market, with activity concentrated in the Middle East, where sovereign accelerated computing programmes and available power are supporting campus development, and to a lesser extent in Latin America, where deployment is expected to follow operational validation in the principal markets.

Competitive landscape

The global 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market is moderately fragmented, with power shelf and module manufacturers competing against data center power system companies and original design manufacturers building to open specification. Market participants compete on power density per Open Rack Unit, efficiency across the load range, hot-swap and serviceability with adjacent modules live, conformance with the open rack specification, management and telemetry capability, redundancy behaviour and fault containment, integration of battery backup within the frame, and delivery lead time against a build or upgrade programme.

Leading companies are raising power density per rack unit, developing 800 volt direct current input shelves to succeed alternating current fed products, integrating battery backup within the frame, extending Ethernet-based management and telemetry across the shelf population, and qualifying hot-swap behaviour at higher bus voltages. Recent market context includes the introduction by Advanced Energy Industries of a single-whip alternating current input option for its 33 kW Open Rack v3 High-Power Rack power shelf at the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit announced on 19 October 2026, with six hot-swappable 5.5 kW modules in a one Open Rack Unit form factor delivering 27.5 kW at N plus one redundancy, the contribution of the Mt Diablo disaggregated power rack specification at version 0.5 by Microsoft, Meta and Google on 5 August 2025, and the description by Vertiv of a sidecar architecture returning 8 to 16 rack units to compute.

Expert perspectives

The 800V DC Power Racks and Sidecars Market is usually presented as an 800 volt direct current market, and its current composition is not that. The most recent introduction in the category, announced on 19 October 2026 at the Open Compute Project Global Summit, added a single-whip alternating current input option to a 33 kW Open Rack v3 shelf family available since 2023, and the rack-scale systems in production use 54 volt direct current power shelves. What drives the market is arithmetic rather than voltage: a shelf delivering 33 kW fully populated and 27.5 kW at N plus one means a 1 MW rack requires approximately 30 to 37 shelves of one Open Rack Unit each, which no compute frame can accommodate. The binding constraint is therefore shifting from electrical architecture to hardware volume, thermal capacity and serviceability within a structure of its own.

Three structural changes are expected to shape competitive positions through 2036. First, the market is expected to carry alternating current input and 800 volt direct current input products simultaneously through a multi-year transition tied to a 2027 platform, which imposes dual development, qualification and inventory cost on every supplier. Second, redundancy policy is expected to act as a demand multiplier, since a 16.7% capacity loss at N plus one raises shelf count from approximately 30 to 37 per megawatt and an N plus N policy approximately doubles it. Third, value is expected to move from the frame to the shelves, modules, storage and management within it, because an open specification standardises the structure that any competent fabricator can build.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most defensible positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in specification-conforming 800 volt direct current input shelves brought to qualification ahead of competitors, battery backup integrated within the frame, complete telemetry that supports predictive module replacement and safe reduction of redundancy margin, hot-swap behaviour proven at the higher bus voltage, and retrofit sidecars for the installed base of lower-density halls.

Two cautions belong in any assessment of this market. The first is that the present and forecast compositions differ fundamentally, so a forecast built on current product shipments will describe alternating current fed, 54 volt output hardware rather than the architecture the title names, and the two should be modelled separately. The second is that the open specification which opens this market also removes the basis on which frame and enclosure manufacturers competed, so a forecast of the market is not a forecast of their revenue, and the margin leaving the structure returns only to suppliers able to populate it. Overall, sidecar power racks, alternating current input, 54 volt output, the 100 kW to 500 kW band, N plus one redundancy, configurations without integrated storage and North America are expected to provide the core of demand, with integrated power racks, 800 volt direct current input, split bus output, capacities above 500 kW, N plus N redundancy, integrated battery backup and Asia-Pacific providing the fastest growth.
