Segments covered: etch type, plasma source, application, wafer size.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by record investment in semiconductor manufacturing capacity, the rapid growth of AI and high-performance computing, the transition to gate-all-around (GAA) transistors and advanced DRAM, and the rising number of layers in 3D NAND, all of which increase the number and complexity of etch steps per wafer. In addition, the growth of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced packaging, the adoption of selective and atomic layer etch, and government support for new fabs in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and India are further supporting the growth of this market.

The Semiconductor Etch Equipment Market, also referred to as the semiconductor etching equipment, plasma etch equipment, or wafer etch systems market, comprises the equipment used to selectively remove material from semiconductor wafers to form transistors, interconnects, memory cells, and other structures. The market includes dry etch systems for conductor, dielectric, silicon and deep silicon, selective, and atomic layer etch; wet etch systems, including single-wafer and batch systems; and the plasma sources used in these systems, such as inductively coupled plasma (ICP), capacitively coupled plasma (CCP), and remote plasma sources. It serves logic and foundry, DRAM, 3D NAND, power and compound semiconductor, MEMS and sensor, and advanced packaging manufacturing. The market ecosystem extends from component and subsystem suppliers, such as RF power, vacuum, and chamber component manufacturers, to etch equipment manufacturers, specialty gas and chemical suppliers, and foundries, memory manufacturers, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) providers.

Etch is one of the largest and most technically demanding categories of wafer fab equipment. As chips become smaller and more three-dimensional, the number of etch steps per wafer increases, and each step requires greater precision, selectivity, and control. Gate-all-around transistors, high-aspect-ratio 3D NAND channels, advanced DRAM capacitors, and through-silicon vias all require specialized etch processes, making etch equipment one of the key enablers of semiconductor scaling.

Semiconductor equipment investment is at record levels. According to SEMI, global semiconductor equipment billings reached USD 135.1 billion in 2025, up 15% from USD 117.1 billion in 2024, with China remaining the largest market at USD 49.3 billion, followed by Taiwan at USD 31.5 billion, up 90%, and Korea at USD 25.8 billion, up 26%. SEMI forecasts that global semiconductor equipment sales will increase 23.2% to USD 165.9 billion in 2026 and reach a record USD 229.5 billion in 2028. Etch equipment is expected to benefit from this investment, as new fabs for advanced logic, DRAM, HBM, and 3D NAND require large numbers of etch systems.

AI is the main source of demand growth. Data center processors, AI accelerators, and HBM require the most advanced logic and memory technologies, which use more etch steps than earlier generations. Lam Research, the largest supplier of etch equipment, reported fiscal 2026 revenue of USD 23.23 billion, up from USD 18.44 billion in fiscal 2025, and record quarterly revenue of USD 6.72 billion in the June 2026 quarter, up 30.0% year over year. In the June 2026 quarter, Taiwan accounted for 27% of Lam revenue, China 26%, Korea 20%, Japan 9%, the U.S. 9%, Southeast Asia 5%, and Europe 4%, reflecting the geographic spread of fab investment. Lam CEO Tim Archer said the company is positioning itself for a third consecutive year of outperformance.

Transistor architecture changes are increasing etch intensity. The transition from FinFET to gate-all-around transistors requires precise etching of stacked silicon and silicon-germanium layers, including selective lateral etches that remove one material without damaging the other. In February 2025, Lam Research introduced Akara, its most advanced conductor etch system, featuring a solid-state plasma source with about 100 times faster plasma response than earlier sources, plasma pulsing to improve selectivity, and atomic-level ion energy control. Akara was selected as a production tool of record for foundry GAA and advanced planar DRAM applications and is designed to extend to 4F² DRAM, complementary FET (CFET), and 3D DRAM.

Memory is also driving demand for advanced etch. 3D NAND manufacturers are increasing the number of layers to more than 300, requiring the etching of very deep, narrow channels and holes through alternating layers of material. SK hynix plans to start full production of its 300-layer V10 NAND in early 2027, and Samsung is introducing its V10 NAND. DRAM manufacturers are moving to more advanced nodes and preparing 4F² and 3D DRAM architectures, while HBM production requires through-silicon via etch and additional processing.

Chinese domestic suppliers are gaining share in their home market. AMEC reported 2025 revenue of RMB 12.385 billion, up 36.62%, with R&D spending of RMB 3.74 billion, or 30.2% of revenue, and had shipped more than 6,800 process chambers by the end of 2025, with more than 8,800 chambers deployed across more than 170 customers. Its CCP and ICP etch systems cover more than 20 product segments from 65nm to 3nm. AMEC targets coverage of at least 60% of the high-end semiconductor equipment market within five years.

Export controls are reshaping the market. The U.S. government has enacted export controls on certain technologies sold to customers in China, including entity listings that restrict sales of equipment and spare parts. Lam Research states that its sales to customers in China have been impacted and that these controls give competitors not subject to them an advantage. At the same time, China remained the largest equipment market in 2025 at USD 49.3 billion, according to SEMI, and Chinese manufacturers are increasing purchases from domestic suppliers.

The installed base of etch equipment is very large and generates significant service and upgrade revenue. The Lam Kiyo conductor etch platform, introduced in 2004, has more than 30,000 chambers in production. As the installed base grows, spare parts, upgrades, and services are becoming an increasingly important part of supplier revenue and of the total cost of ownership for chipmakers.

The value of etch equipment per wafer is also increasing. Advanced logic, DRAM, and 3D NAND processes require more etch steps than earlier generations, and each step requires more advanced systems with tighter control of plasma, temperature, and chemistry. As a result, etch equipment spending is expected to grow faster than wafer capacity over the forecast period, while services and upgrades for the installed base provide a growing source of recurring revenue for suppliers.

Competition in the market is shaped by close collaboration between equipment suppliers and leading chipmakers. Lam Research names Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and TSMC as its most significant customers, reflecting the concentration of demand among a small number of leading logic and memory manufacturers. Suppliers that are selected as tools of record for new technology nodes, as Akara was for foundry GAA and advanced DRAM, typically secure demand for several years as those nodes ramp.

Record investment in semiconductor manufacturing capacity is a major factor driving the Semiconductor Etch Equipment Market.

Investment is being driven by AI, by government programs to build domestic chip production, and by the expansion of memory capacity. New fabs for advanced logic, DRAM, HBM, and 3D NAND require large numbers of etch systems, as etch is used repeatedly throughout the manufacturing process. This is expected to support strong demand for etch equipment through the forecast period.

02

Rapid Growth of AI and High-Performance Computing

AI accelerators, data center processors, and HBM are the most demanding semiconductor products and require the most advanced manufacturing processes. Taiwan, home to the leading foundry for AI chips, accounted for 27% of Lam revenue in the June 2026 quarter, and SEMI reported that equipment billings in Taiwan increased 90% in 2025.

As AI chips move to more advanced nodes and use 3D stacking and advanced packaging, the number of etch steps per chip increases. This trend is expected to make AI the largest single source of demand growth for etch equipment over the forecast period.

03

Transition to Gate-All-Around Transistors and Advanced DRAM

The transition from FinFET to GAA transistors is increasing the number and complexity of etch steps. GAA transistors require the etching of stacked nanosheets, selective removal of sacrificial layers, and precise control of gate and spacer profiles. Lam Akara was selected as a production tool of record for foundry GAA applications, and Intel is producing its 18A process, which uses GAA transistors, for products such as its Clearwater Forest server processor.

DRAM manufacturers are also moving to more advanced nodes and preparing new architectures such as 4F² and 3D DRAM, which require new etch processes. Akara was selected as a production tool of record for advanced planar DRAM and is designed to extend to 4F² and 3D DRAM, reflecting the growing etch requirements of memory.

04

Rising Layer Counts in 3D NAND

3D NAND manufacturers are increasing layer counts to more than 300, which requires etching very deep, high-aspect-ratio channels through alternating layers of material. SK hynix plans full production of its 300-layer V10 NAND in early 2027, and Samsung is introducing V10 NAND. Each increase in layer count makes high-aspect-ratio etch more difficult and increases demand for advanced dielectric etch systems, including cryogenic etch.

NAND manufacturers are also adopting wafer bonding to build memory arrays and peripheral circuits on separate wafers, which adds etch steps for bonding interfaces. These trends are expected to support demand for advanced dielectric and conductor etch systems from memory manufacturers.

Around 93% of Lam Research revenue in fiscal 2026 came from outside the U.S., reflecting the concentration of chip production in Asia and the importance of memory investment in Korea and China to etch equipment demand.
