Report overview
Segments covered: device, data rate, application.
The growth of this market is mainly driven by the rapid build-out of AI data centers and the shift from copper to optical interconnects, the transition to 800G, 1.6T, and 3.2T optical transceivers, the growing use of high-power continuous-wave (CW) lasers for silicon photonics and co-packaged optics, and the expansion of coherent optical networks for data center interconnect and telecom. In addition, the move to 6-inch indium phosphide (InP) wafer manufacturing, government support for domestic photonics production, and the adoption of InP devices in sensing and 5G and 6G networks are further supporting the growth of this market.
The Indium Phosphide Photonics Market, also referred to as the InP photonics, InP optoelectronics, or InP photonic integrated circuit market, comprises the photonic devices and integrated circuits manufactured on indium phosphide substrates. The market includes lasers, such as electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs), distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, high-power CW lasers for silicon photonics, and tunable lasers; photodetectors, including PIN photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes (APDs); modulators, such as Mach-Zehnder modulators; InP photonic integrated circuits, including transmitter, receiver, and coherent PICs; and semiconductor optical amplifiers. These devices are used in datacom transceivers, telecom networks, co-packaged optics, sensing, and other applications. The market ecosystem extends from InP substrate and epitaxial wafer suppliers to device and PIC manufacturers, foundries, optical module and transceiver manufacturers, network equipment vendors, and cloud and telecom operators.
Indium phosphide is the leading material for light sources and detectors in optical communications, as it allows lasers and photodetectors to operate at the 1,310 nm and 1,550 nm wavelengths used in optical fiber. Unlike silicon, InP can generate light efficiently, and it supports the integration of lasers, modulators, amplifiers, and detectors on a single chip. As a result, nearly all high-speed optical transceivers use InP lasers, either as directly modulated lasers, EMLs, or CW lasers coupled to silicon photonic modulators.
AI data centers are the main source of demand growth. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global data centre electricity demand grew 17% in 2025 to around 485 TWh and is projected to roughly double to around 950 TWh by 2030, while hyperscaler capital expenditure exceeded USD 400 billion in 2025 and is expected to rise by about 75% in 2026. AI clusters connect thousands of GPUs and accelerators through high-speed optical links, and each optical transceiver requires one or more InP lasers and photodetectors. Coherent reported fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of USD 2.05 billion, up 34% year over year, and said it enters fiscal 2027 with exceptional customer demand and expanding production capacity, as AI data center architectures shift from copper to optical connectivity.
Leading InP device suppliers are growing rapidly. Lumentum reported fiscal 2026 revenue of USD 3,014.0 million, up 83.2%, including components revenue of USD 2,005.6 million, up 79.7%, and fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of USD 1,006.3 million, up 109.3% year over year, and guided to revenue of USD 1.225 billion to USD 1.275 billion for Q1 fiscal 2027. Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston cited increasing demand for ultra-high-power lasers for co-packaged optics (CPO) as an early sign that optics are reaching in-rack connectivity, which would further expand the use of InP lasers in AI systems.
Manufacturing is moving to larger wafers. Coherent has established 6-inch InP wafer fabs in Sherman, Texas, and Järfälla, Sweden, and says the 6-inch platform can produce four times as many devices per wafer as 3-inch wafers and reduce die cost by more than 60%. Coherent is qualifying 200G EMLs, 200G DFB lasers with Mach-Zehnder modulators, 100G EMLs, high-speed photodetectors, and high-power CW lasers for silicon photonics on the 6-inch platform, for applications in datacom, AI interconnects, coherent communications, sensing, and future 6G and satellite networks.
Governments are supporting domestic InP photonics production. In October 2024, Infinera, now part of Nokia, signed a preliminary memorandum of terms with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to USD 93 million in CHIPS Act funding, with total federal incentives that could exceed USD 200 million, to build a new InP PIC fab in San Jose, California, with more than 40,000 square feet of cleanroom space, and an advanced test and packaging facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The San Jose project is expected to increase production capacity by a factor of 10.
Supply chain risks are a growing concern. In February 2025, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs announced export controls on items related to indium, tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, and molybdenum. China is a major producer of indium and InP substrates, and AXT, a leading supplier of InP substrates, produces substrates through its China subsidiary, Beijing Tongmei Xtal Technology, which received export permits in August 2025 to ship InP substrates to certain additional customers. These controls have increased attention on the security of InP supply chains.
Telecom networks remain an important application. Coherent optical transceivers for data center interconnect, metro, and long-haul networks use InP lasers, modulators, and PICs, and the growth of AI is increasing traffic between data centers. Access networks, such as passive optical networks and 5G fronthaul, also use InP lasers and photodetectors in large volumes.
Sensing is an emerging application for InP photonics. InP lasers and detectors operating at eye-safe wavelengths are used in LiDAR, consumer health sensing, and industrial sensing, and Coherent includes advanced sensing for consumer electronics and wearables, medical, and automotive applications among the target markets for its 6-inch InP platform.
The value of InP content per optical link is increasing. An 800G transceiver may use eight 100G lasers or four 200G lasers, together with matching photodetectors, while 1.6T transceivers require higher-speed devices, and co-packaged optics systems may use many high-power CW lasers per switch. Each new generation requires more advanced InP epitaxy and device designs, raising the value of InP devices even as costs per bit decline. As a result, market value is expected to grow strongly as AI clusters scale and data rates increase.
The supply side of the market includes vertically integrated suppliers that make both InP devices and transceivers, such as Coherent, Lumentum, and Applied Optoelectronics; merchant laser suppliers, such as Broadcom, Mitsubishi Electric, and Sumitomo Electric; Chinese laser and module suppliers, such as Accelink, Hisense Broadband, Source Photonics, and Yuanjie Semiconductor; network equipment vendors with in-house InP PIC capabilities, such as Nokia through Infinera; and InP foundries and PIC developers, such as Smart Photonics, Sivers, and EFFECT Photonics. Competition is increasingly based on capacity, speed of new product qualification, and the ability to supply leading cloud customers in volume.
Market dynamics
15 factors across 5 forcesRapid Build-Out of AI Data Centers and Optical Interconnects
The rapid build-out of AI data centers is a major factor driving the Indium Phosphide Photonics Market. AI clusters require large numbers of high-speed optical links between GPUs, switches, and servers, and each link uses InP lasers and photodetectors.
The results of leading suppliers reflect this demand. Coherent reported fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of USD 2.05 billion, up 34% year over year, and said it enters fiscal 2027 with exceptional customer demand and expanding production capacity, as AI data center architectures shift from copper to optical connectivity. As AI clusters grow larger and data rates increase, demand for InP lasers and detectors is expected to grow rapidly through the forecast period.
Transition to 800G, 1.6T, and 3.2T Optical Transceivers
Optical transceivers are moving from 400G to 800G and 1.6T, with 3.2T under development. Higher data rates require lasers with higher modulation speeds, such as 200G-per-lane EMLs and DFB lasers with Mach-Zehnder modulators, which Coherent is qualifying on its 6-inch InP platform. Each new generation increases the performance requirements and value of InP devices.
The transition to higher data rates is expected to drive continuous demand for new InP laser and detector designs, favoring suppliers with advanced epitaxy and device design capabilities.
Growth of Silicon Photonics and Co-Packaged Optics
Silicon photonics transceivers and co-packaged optics use external or integrated InP CW lasers as light sources, as silicon cannot generate light efficiently. As silicon photonics gains share in 800G and 1.6T transceivers and CPO moves toward production, demand for high-power CW lasers is increasing. Lumentum reported increasing demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers in fiscal Q4 2026, and Coherent is qualifying high-power CW lasers for silicon photonics on its 6-inch platform.
Because CPO places optics inside switch and processor packages, it could greatly increase the number of lasers per system, making it one of the most important long-term drivers of the market.
Expansion of Coherent Optical Networks
The growth of AI is increasing traffic between data centers, driving demand for coherent optical transceivers for data center interconnect, metro, and long-haul networks. Coherent transceivers use InP tunable lasers, modulators, and PICs, and Nokia, through its acquisition of Infinera, is investing in InP PIC capacity, with the San Jose fab expected to increase capacity by a factor of 10.
Coherent pluggable transceivers, such as 400ZR and 800ZR modules, are increasingly used directly in routers and switches, expanding the market for compact InP coherent PICs.
The growth of AI traffic between data centers in different locations, including distributed AI training across campuses, is expected to further increase demand for coherent InP devices over the forecast period.
