Key highlights

01

The global Lithium Mining and Refining Market is projected to reach USD 96.10 billion by 2036, driven by battery demand growth, the recovery in lithium pricing from 2025 levels, restrained producer capital commitment and the restructuring of resource ownership in the principal producing jurisdictions.

02

The 2026 recovery is predominantly a price event rather than a volume event. For the second quarter of 2026, Albemarle Corporation reported an average realized price of USD 19.53 per kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent against USD 12.17 per kilogram a year earlier, an increase of 60.5%, while sales volume rose 11.0% to 65 thousand metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent from 59 thousand metric tons.

03

The effect on reported results is disproportionate. Albemarle Energy Storage net sales rose 77.9% to USD 1,276.7 million and segment adjusted EBITDA rose 229.3% to USD 723.5 million, attributed primarily to higher lithium pricing partially offset by higher CORFO commissions, while group net sales rose 31.1% to USD 1,743.3 million and group adjusted EBITDA rose 155.0% to USD 858.1 million.

04

A second major producer reported the same pattern at greater magnitude. For the second quarter of 2026, Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. reported revenues of USD 2,468.4 million against USD 1,042.7 million a year earlier, an increase of 136.7%, net income of USD 660.0 million against USD 88.4 million, and lithium and derivatives revenues of USD 1,779.2 million against USD 445.2 million, an increase of 299.7%, on sales volumes above 84.1 thousand metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent against 53.1 thousand metric tons, an increase of 59%.

05

Concentrate pricing recovered faster than chemical pricing. The average realized price at Nova Andino was approximately USD 21.8 per kilogram in the second quarter of 2026, up almost 23% against the first quarter of 2026 and close to 160% year on year, while the spodumene price was approximately USD 2,048 per metric ton, up more than 40% against the first quarter and more than 160% year on year.

06

Price sensitivity dominates the earnings of this industry. Albemarle published a scenario-based full-year 2026 outlook in which a lithium price of approximately USD 10 per kilogram, the average for 2025, produces net sales of USD 4.1 billion to USD 4.3 billion and adjusted EBITDA of USD 0.9 billion to USD 1.0 billion, a price of approximately USD 20 per kilogram, the average for the first quarter of 2026, produces net sales of USD 5.7 billion to USD 6.0 billion and adjusted EBITDA of USD 2.4 billion to USD 2.6 billion, and a price of approximately USD 30 per kilogram, the average for 2021 to 2025, produces net sales of USD 7.5 billion to USD 7.8 billion and adjusted EBITDA of USD 4.2 billion to USD 4.4 billion.

07

The supply response is being deliberately withheld. Albemarle guided full-year 2026 Energy Storage sales volume of 225 to 235 thousand metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent and capital expenditure of approximately USD 500 million, down 15% against 2025, having placed Kemerton Train 1 into care and maintenance with associated restructuring charges of USD 7.3 million in the quarter, while a fire on 9 June delayed the ramp of Talison CGP3 with minimal expected effect on volume owing to better than planned output at Wodgina.

08

Resource ownership has been restructured in the largest brine jurisdiction. On 27 December 2025, Codelco and Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. formed Nova Andino Litio SpA by merging Minera Tarar SpA with SQM Salar SpA, a public-private partnership with majority state participation and a board comprising three Codelco and three SQM representatives, which holds the assets, permits and staff of the lithium business and conducts exploration, exploitation, production and commercialisation of lithium in the Salar de Atacama under the current CORFO contracts and those taking effect from 2031, with operations secured through 2060.

09

Asia-Pacific is expected to account for the largest market share in 2026 through Australian mine supply and Chinese refining capacity, while South America is projected to register the fastest growth during the forecast period.

Segments covered: resource type, value chain stage, product, technology, application.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by the recovery in lithium chemical and concentrate pricing from the levels that prevailed in 2025, which has approximately doubled the value of the same physical volume; the continued expansion of battery demand for electric vehicles and stationary storage, which converts directly into lithium carbonate equivalent requirements; the restraint shown by producers in committing new capital despite that price recovery, which limits the supply response and supports pricing through the near term; and the restructuring of resource ownership in the principal producing jurisdictions, which is securing long-term operating rights while changing how the resulting value is shared.

In addition, the shift in cathode chemistry toward lithium iron phosphate, which favours lithium carbonate over lithium hydroxide, the development of direct lithium extraction as an alternative to evaporation ponds and acid roasting, and the long-dated nature of the expansion projects now in progress are further shaping the growth of this market. The 2025 base and the 2026 estimate reflect materially different price environments, and the forecast in this report is built on a stated long-run price assumption rather than on an extrapolation of the 2026 price level.

The Lithium Mining and Refining Market comprises the extraction of lithium-bearing resources and their conversion into the chemical products that battery and industrial customers purchase. The market includes brine extraction from salars and the evaporation, purification and precipitation that follow; hard rock mining of spodumene, lepidolite and petalite pegmatites and the flotation that produces concentrate; the acid roasting, leaching and crystallisation that convert concentrate into lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide; the production of lithium metal, chloride and specialty organolithium compounds; and the emerging extraction of lithium from clay-hosted deposits, geothermal brine and oilfield brine. The market ecosystem extends from resource holders and host state entities through miners, concentrate producers, tolling converters and integrated chemical producers to cathode and battery manufacturers, industrial users in ceramics, glass, greases and air treatment, and the regulators, water authorities and community stakeholders whose consent determines whether a project proceeds.

The defining feature of this market in 2026 is that its value has changed far more than its volume. A 60.5% price increase against an 11.0% volume increase shows where the movement in market value originated, and any assessment that attributes the 2026 expansion of this market to demand growth will misread it.

The leverage that price exerts on reported results is extreme. Albemarle Energy Storage net sales rose 77.9% to USD 1,276.7 million and segment adjusted EBITDA rose 229.3% to USD 723.5 million, attributed primarily to higher lithium pricing partially offset by higher CORFO commissions, while group net sales rose 31.1% to USD 1,743.3 million and group adjusted EBITDA rose 155.0% to USD 858.1 million. Segment adjusted EBITDA rising 229.3% on a 77.9% sales increase and an 11.0% volume increase is the arithmetic of a business whose costs are largely fixed against a price that is not, and it is why the earnings of this industry are a poor proxy for the physical scale of the market.

The same pattern appeared at the other major brine producer in more pronounced form. A 299.7% increase in lithium revenues on a 59% volume increase separates cleanly into a volume contribution and a much larger price contribution, and because this producer sells both chemicals and concentrate, its disclosure also reveals how the two moved relative to one another.

That relative movement is informative. Concentrate pricing rising more than 40% quarter on quarter against chemical pricing rising almost 23% indicates that the mine gate captured more of the recovery than the converter did, which is the opposite of the pattern through the downturn, when converters with tolling capacity were able to protect margin against falling chemical prices. The implication is that integrated producers and concentrate holders are better positioned in a rising market than independent conversion capacity.

The sensitivity of this industry to price is now disclosed explicitly rather than inferred. A fourfold range in full-year adjusted EBITDA driven by a single variable, published as guidance rather than as sensitivity analysis, is an unusual admission and it is the clearest statement available of where the risk in this market lies.

What has not happened is the supply response that such a price recovery would ordinarily provoke. A 15% reduction in capital expenditure and a conversion train placed into care and maintenance, decided while realized prices were rising more than 60%, is evidence of capital discipline that survived the price recovery rather than ending with it, and it reflects the experience of a downturn in which capacity committed at high prices was commissioned into low ones.

The expansion that is proceeding is long-dated and therefore does not relieve the near term. Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. expects the conversion of the Nova Andino lithium hydroxide plant into a dual-purpose facility to be completed by mid-2027 and expects to surpass 300,000 metric tons of production capacity by the end of 2027, while the Mt Holland expansion with Wesfarmers is expected to double attributable spodumene concentrate capacity to approximately 350 thousand metric tons at 6% lithium oxide, requiring approximately USD 450 million to USD 500 million attributable between 2026 and 2029 with first production expected during 2030, and the Salar Futuro project carries an estimated capital investment of approximately USD 3 billion over about seven years following approvals. Capacity surpassing 300,000 metric tons by the end of 2027 at an existing operation, a doubling of attributable concentrate capacity with first production during 2030, and a USD 3 billion brine project requiring approximately seven years after approvals together describe a supply response arriving in the 2030s, which leaves the intervening period dependent on existing assets and exposed to price.

Alongside the commercial cycle, the ownership of the resource itself has been restructured in the largest brine jurisdiction. A public-private partnership with majority state participation holding the permits, assets and staff of an operation secured to 2060 resolves the licence uncertainty that had overhung the asset, and it establishes a template in which the host state participates in the equity of production rather than only in its taxation. The consequence for this market is that long-term access to the lowest-cost resources increasingly requires a state partner, which changes the return available to private capital without changing the physical supply.

The market includes integrated chemical producers, diversified miners, Australian hard rock producers, Chinese converters and host state entities, among them Albemarle Corporation, Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A., Ganfeng Lithium Group, Tianqi Lithium Corporation, Rio Tinto Group, Pilbara Minerals, Mineral Resources, IGO, Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile, Zijin Mining Group, Yahua Industrial Group, Chengxin Lithium Group, Zangge Mining, POSCO Holdings, Lithium Americas Corporation, Eramet, Wesfarmers and Liontown Resources. Participants compete on position on the cost curve, resource grade and impurity profile, integration between mine and conversion capacity, product qualification with cathode producers, security of licence and host state relationship, water and permitting position, and the capital flexibility to withstand a price cycle rather than to expand into one.

At the same time, the market faces challenges, including the price volatility that makes project economics difficult to underwrite; the mismatch between the multi-year lead time of new capacity and the duration of a price cycle; water use, brine abstraction and community consent constraints in salar jurisdictions; the concentration of conversion capacity in a single country, which exposes the chain to trade and policy measures; and the dependence of demand on cathode chemistry choices that can move lithium requirements per kilowatt hour without any change in battery demand. As a result, producers that combine low-cost resource positions, integration through to chemical product and capital discipline through the cycle are expected to capture the largest share of value over the forecast period.

Market dynamics

15 factors across 5 forces
01

Recovery in Lithium Chemical and Concentrate Pricing

The recovery in lithium chemical and concentrate pricing is a major factor driving the Lithium Mining and Refining Market in value terms, because the market is measured in the value of material sold and that value approximately doubled against 2025 without a comparable change in volume.

The disclosure from the other major brine producer confirms the magnitude. Chemical pricing close to 160% higher year on year and concentrate pricing more than 160% higher year on year place the 2026 market in an entirely different value environment from 2025, and because the recovery occurred within a single year, the year-on-year comparison for this market is dominated by price rather than by physical growth.

02

Battery Demand for Electric Vehicles and Stationary Storage

Battery demand for electric vehicles and stationary storage is significantly driving market growth and provides the volume component beneath the price movement. Lithium has no substitute in the cathode and electrolyte of a lithium-ion cell, so battery output converts directly into lithium carbonate equivalent requirements, and the growth of stationary storage has added a demand stream that is less sensitive to vehicle sales cycles than the automotive one.

Volume growth in 2026 was real but modest relative to price. Albemarle Energy Storage net sales rose 77.9% to USD 1,276.7 million and segment adjusted EBITDA rose 229.3% to USD 723.5 million, attributed primarily to higher lithium pricing partially offset by higher CORFO commissions Guidance of 225 to 235 thousand metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent for the full year at one producer, against 65 thousand metric tons in a single quarter, indicates steady rather than accelerating volume expansion, which is consistent with a market where the binding issue in 2026 was price rather than offtake.

03

Restrained Producer Capital Commitment

Restrained producer capital commitment is an important driver of market value, because withholding supply in a recovering price environment sustains the price that creates that value.

The decision to reduce capital expenditure and idle conversion capacity while realized prices rose more than 60% is the clearest evidence available that the industry has changed its behaviour following the downturn. Capacity committed during the previous price peak was commissioned into a trough, impairments followed, and the producers that survived have prioritised balance sheet strength over volume growth. The effect is to extend the period over which the current price environment persists, which supports the value of this market through the near term.

04

Restructuring of Resource Ownership and Long-Term Licence Security

The restructuring of resource ownership and long-term licence security supports market growth by making long-horizon investment in the lowest-cost resources possible.

Securing operating rights to 2060 at the principal brine asset removes the licence expiry that had constrained investment decisions there, and it allows capacity expansion and the Salar Futuro project to be evaluated over a full asset life. The arrangement also establishes a model that other host states are expected to examine, in which participation takes the form of equity in the producing entity rather than royalty alone, which changes the distribution of value from this market without reducing the physical supply it delivers.

By Resource Type

  • Lithium Mining and Refining Market Analysis by Resource Type
  • Hard Rock & Pegmatite is further segmented into Spodumene, Lepidolite, and Petalite & Other Minerals.
  • Unconventional Sources are further segmented into Geothermal Brine and Oilfield Brine.
  • The Hard Rock & Pegmatite segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global Lithium Mining and Refining Market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the position of Australian spodumene as the principal source of mine supply, the shorter development timeline of a hard rock mine relative to a salar, and the recovery of concentrate pricing to approximately USD 2,048 per metric ton in the second quarter of 2026, more than 160% above the level a year earlier.
  • However, the Brine segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to its position at the low end of the cost curve, to the expansion of capacity at existing salar operations toward and beyond 300,000 metric tons by the end of 2027, and to the resolution of long-term licence security that has made multi-decade investment in these assets possible.
  • The Unconventional Sources segment is expected to grow from a small base as direct lithium extraction is applied to geothermal and oilfield brine streams already produced at surface.

By Value Chain Stage

  • Lithium Mining and Refining Market Analysis by Value Chain Stage
  • Refining & Conversion is further segmented into Carbonate Conversion, Hydroxide Conversion, and Metal & Chloride Production.
  • Mining & Concentration is further segmented into Hard Rock Mining & Flotation and Brine Extraction & Evaporation.
  • The Refining & Conversion segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the higher value of battery-grade chemical product relative to concentrate, the requirement for every unit of lithium reaching a cathode producer to pass through conversion, and the qualification relationships that tie conversion capacity to specific customers over extended periods.
  • However, the Mining & Concentration segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to the evidence that the mine gate captured more of the 2026 price recovery than the converter did, with spodumene pricing rising more than 40% quarter on quarter against chemical pricing rising almost 23%, and to the resulting advantage held by resource positions over independent conversion capacity in a rising market.

03

By Product

  • Lithium Mining and Refining Market Analysis by Product
  • Lithium Carbonate is further segmented into Battery Grade and Technical Grade.
  • The Lithium Carbonate segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global Lithium Mining and Refining Market, and it is also projected to register the higher growth rate during the forecast period.
  • The large share and rapid growth of this segment are mainly due to the adoption of lithium iron phosphate cathodes, which use carbonate rather than hydroxide, across electric vehicle and stationary storage applications, to the use of carbonate as the feedstock from which hydroxide is produced in several conversion routes, and to its role as the reference product against which contracts in this market are priced.
  • The Lithium Hydroxide segment is expected to grow more slowly than carbonate, contrary to the expectation that prevailed when nickel-rich cathodes were assumed to dominate.
  • The widening of the spread between carbonate and hydroxide pricing through 2026 reflected that shift, as did the emergence of a net hydroxide export position in South Korea amid weak domestic demand for nickel manganese cobalt cathodes.
  • The Spodumene Concentrate segment is expected to grow strongly on the strength of mine gate pricing, while Lithium Metal & Chloride and Specialty Lithium Compounds are expected to grow steadily from a smaller base.

04

By Technology

  • Lithium Mining and Refining Market Analysis by Technology
  • The Flotation & Acid Roasting segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market.
  • The large share of this segment is mainly due to the dominance of hard rock spodumene in mine supply, which requires flotation at the mine and sulfuric acid roasting and leaching at the converter, and to the extensive installed base of roasting capacity built to process Australian concentrate.
  • However, the Direct Lithium Extraction segment is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
  • The rapid growth of this segment is attributed to the shorter production ramp it offers relative to evaporation ponds, its lower land and water footprint in jurisdictions where those constraints govern approval, and its ability to process lower-grade and higher-impurity brines including geothermal and oilfield streams.
  • Growth is from a small base and depends on demonstrating sustained recovery rates and reagent costs at commercial scale.

05

By Application

  • Lithium Mining and Refining Market Analysis by Application
  • Batteries are further segmented into Electric Vehicles, Stationary Energy Storage, and Consumer & Industrial Electronics.
  • The Batteries segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global Lithium Mining and Refining Market, and it is also projected to register the higher growth rate during the forecast period.
  • The large share and rapid growth of this segment are mainly due to the absence of any substitute for lithium in the cathode and electrolyte of a lithium-ion cell, the scale of electric vehicle production, and the addition of stationary storage as a demand stream that is less sensitive to vehicle sales cycles.
  • Within batteries, the Stationary Energy Storage sub-segment is expected to grow fastest, as grid and data centre storage procurement has become less dependent on consumer purchasing cycles and favours lithium iron phosphate chemistry, which reinforces carbonate demand.
  • The Ceramics & Glass, Lubricating Greases, Air Treatment and Polymers & Pharmaceuticals segments are expected to grow in line with industrial production and to retain importance as the demand base that persists through battery market cycles.

Geographic analysis

01

Asia-Pacific

Largest share

In 2026, Asia-Pacific is expected to account for the largest share of the global Lithium Mining and Refining Market. The large share of this region is mainly attributed to the position of Australia as the principal source of spodumene concentrate, the concentration of global lithium chemical conversion capacity in China, the proximity of that capacity to the cathode and cell manufacturing it serves, and the presence of Ganfeng Lithium Group, Tianqi Lithium Corporation, Pilbara Minerals, Mineral Resources, IGO, Zijin Mining Group, Yahua Industrial Group, Chengxin Lithium Group, Zangge Mining, POSCO Holdings, Wesfarmers and Liontown Resources. South America is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The growth of this region is driven by the low position of salar brine on the cost curve, capacity expansion at existing operations in Chile and the ramp of newer operations in Argentina, and the resolution of long-term licence security at the principal asset. The region also carries the water, permitting and community consent constraints that govern the pace of brine development, and the approval period preceding a project of approximately seven years is the principal determinant of its supply timeline.

02

North America

North America is expected to account for a smaller share of the market while growing, supported by policy frameworks that condition support on supply chain origin, by clay-hosted and geothermal brine projects at an earlier stage of development, and by the presence of Albemarle Corporation and Lithium Americas Corporation. Announced conversion capacity in the region has consistently exceeded capacity delivered, reflecting higher operating costs and qualification periods measured in years.

03

Europe

Europe is expected to account for a limited share of the market while growing, supported by regulatory requirements on battery supply chain origin and recycled content, by hard rock and geothermal brine projects in development, and by the presence of Eramet and the European conversion assets of Rio Tinto Group. The Rest of the World is expected to account for a limited share, with activity concentrated in Zimbabwe, Mali, Brazil and the Middle East, where hard rock production has grown and where conversion capacity is being considered alongside it.

Competitive landscape

The global Lithium Mining and Refining Market is moderately consolidated, with a small group of integrated chemical producers and diversified miners holding the lowest-cost resource positions, a larger group of Australian hard rock producers supplying concentrate, and a substantial field of Chinese converters processing that concentrate into chemical product. Host state entities now participate directly in production in the principal brine jurisdiction. Market participants compete on position on the cost curve, resource grade and impurity profile, integration between mine and conversion capacity, product qualification with cathode producers, security of licence and host state relationship, water and permitting position, and the capital flexibility to withstand a price cycle rather than to expand into one.

Leading companies are prioritising balance sheet strength over volume growth, idling higher-cost conversion capacity, deferring capital commitments despite the price recovery, extending integration between resource and chemical product, qualifying direct lithium extraction at commercial scale, and entering host state partnership structures to secure long-term resource access. Recent market context includes the formation of Nova Andino Litio SpA by Codelco and Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. on 27 December 2025 with operations secured through 2060, a 15% reduction in Albemarle capital expenditure to approximately USD 500 million for 2026 with Kemerton Train 1 placed into care and maintenance, the expected completion of the Nova Andino dual-purpose conversion facility by mid-2027 with capacity surpassing 300,000 metric tons by the end of 2027, and the Mt Holland expansion with first production expected during 2030.

Expert perspectives

The Lithium Mining and Refining Market is commonly assessed as a demand story, and the 2026 evidence does not support that reading. Albemarle lifted its realized price 60.5% while volume rose 11.0%, and Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. lifted lithium revenues 299.7% while volume rose 59%, so the expansion in the value of this market came overwhelmingly from price. The Albemarle scenario guidance makes the dependency explicit, with full-year adjusted EBITDA ranging from USD 0.9 billion to USD 4.4 billion on a lithium price between approximately USD 10 and USD 30 per kilogram. The binding constraint is therefore shifting from demand to the willingness of producers to commit capital, because the price level that would ordinarily call forth new supply has arrived and the supply has not followed.

Three structural changes are expected to shape competitive positions through 2036. First, capital discipline is expected to persist until price stability rather than price level is established, as a 15% capital expenditure reduction and a conversion train idled during a 60% price rise demonstrate, which prolongs the current tightness. Second, the advantage is expected to sit with integrated positions rather than with either end of the chain, since concentrate pricing rose more than 40% quarter on quarter against chemical pricing rising almost 23%, reversing the pattern of the downturn. Third, state participation in resource ownership is expected to extend beyond Chile, since a partnership with majority state participation securing operations to 2060 has established equity rather than royalty as the mechanism by which host states capture value.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most defensible positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in low-cost brine resources held under secure long-term arrangements, integration between concentrate and chemical capacity, lithium carbonate conversion aligned to lithium iron phosphate demand, direct lithium extraction applied to by-product brine streams already at surface, and the balance sheet capacity to acquire assets from distressed holders in the next downturn rather than to build into the current recovery.

Two cautions belong in any assessment of this market. The first concerns the base: the 2025 figure and the 2026 estimate in this report reflect materially different price environments, approximately USD 10 and approximately USD 18 to USD 20 per kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent respectively, so the year-on-year increase measures a price recovery and not physical growth, and volume should be tracked separately. The second concerns the forecast: the long-run price assumption on which the 2036 figure rests is below the 2026 level, because the long-dated expansion now in progress, with capacity surpassing 300,000 metric tons at one operation by the end of 2027, first production from a doubled concentrate operation during 2030 and a USD 3 billion brine project approximately seven years from approval, is expected to loosen the market in the 2030s. A forecast extrapolating the 2026 price would substantially overstate this market. Overall, hard rock and pegmatite resources, refining and conversion, lithium carbonate, flotation and acid roasting, batteries and Asia-Pacific are expected to provide the core of demand, with brine resources, mining and concentration, direct lithium extraction, stationary storage and South America providing the fastest growth.
