Segments covered: offering, automation type, mode of automation, connectivity & architecture, project type, enterprise size, end-use industry, sales channel.

The growth of this market is mainly driven by an order book that turned sharply positive across the major suppliers after a trough year, control software and recurring revenue growing at two to three times the rate of the underlying hardware, Chinese robot installations and domestic supplier share that now set global volume, semiconductor, data centre and warehouse automation demand, and a European machinery compliance date inside the forecast window that concentrates replacement decisions. However, industrial robot installations that are falling across Japan and most of Western Europe, a 19.8% year-on-year decline in United States private manufacturing construction that removes greenfield projects, service and lifecycle revenue that is contracting at the largest suppliers, and tariff and component cost inflation restrain the growth of this market.

Furthermore, brownfield modernisation of installed control systems, software-defined and virtualised automation architectures, hybrid and batch process automation in pharmaceutical and semiconductor manufacture, and autonomous plant operation are expected to offer growth opportunities for the stakeholders in this market. However, conformity assessment requirements for self-evolving safety functions, limited engineering capacity and system integrator availability, legacy estate fragmentation and restricted data access, and price competition from Chinese automation suppliers remain major challenges impacting the growth of this market. Additionally, the faster growth of control software relative to hardware and services, order intake leading reported revenue through the capital cycle, consolidation and portfolio separation among the major suppliers, and the concentration of volume growth in a small number of markets are prominent trends in this market.

The Industrial Automation Market comprises the solutions and services through which manufacturing and process operations are measured, controlled, coordinated and optimised. The market includes enterprise-level controls spanning product lifecycle management, enterprise resource planning and manufacturing execution systems; plant instrumentation spanning motors and drives, robots, sensors, machine vision systems, relays and switches; plant-level controls spanning supervisory control and data acquisition, distributed control systems and programmable logic controllers; and services spanning integration and installation, maintenance and support, advisory, training and consulting, and safety and security. These systems enable process control, machine control, quality inspection, material handling, production scheduling and plant optimisation. The market ecosystem extends from semiconductor and power electronics suppliers, sensor and instrument makers, motor, drive and actuator manufacturers, robot builders and machine vision suppliers to controller and industrial computing vendors, industrial networking providers, control and operations software developers, machine builders, system integrators and engineering contractors, panel builders and distributors, and the discrete, process and hybrid manufacturers across oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, metals, food and beverage, power, automotive, machinery, semiconductors and aerospace that operate these systems.

The market is experiencing strong growth as order intake across the major automation suppliers has turned sharply positive following a weak capital equipment year. Siemens Digital Industries revenue fell 4% to EUR 17,788 million in fiscal 2025 and profit fell 24% at a 14.9% margin against 18.9%, with fourth-quarter severance of EUR 224 million charged mainly for capacity adjustments in automation, while fourth-quarter orders rose 30% to EUR 5,511 million. Across the first nine months of fiscal 2026, orders reached EUR 14,465 million, up 12%, revenue rose 10% to EUR 14,083 million, profit rose 39% to EUR 2,583 million and the margin reached 18.3% against 14.6%, with segment guidance of 7% to 10% comparable revenue growth at a 17% to 19% margin. Increasing investments in process control, machine control, industrial software and plant modernisation are significantly increasing demand across this market.

Rising control software and recurring revenue are further strengthening market growth, as suppliers increasingly sell controllers, drives and historians with embedded software and lifecycle support. Rockwell Automation reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 sales of USD 2,313 million, up 8% with organic growth of 10% and an enterprise operating margin of 22.3% against 19.5%, within which Software & Control rose 19% to USD 751 million at a 34.8% segment margin against 31.6%, Intelligent Devices rose 12% to USD 1,080 million at a 20.0% margin, and Lifecycle Services fell 12% to USD 482 million. Full-year guidance was raised to organic growth of 7.5% to 9.5% from 5% to 9%. Emerson reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 Software & Systems revenue of USD 1,644 million, up 11% underlying, and Test & Measurement revenue of USD 445 million, up 23%.

Another major growth driver is the concentration of robot installation volume across a small number of markets. World Robotics 2026, published on 24 September 2026, recorded the global operational stock of industrial robots rising 9% to a record 5 million units in 2025 on more than 600,000 new installations, up 11%, with installations forecast to rise 9% to 655,000 units in 2026 and to reach 806,000 by 2029. China accounted for 354,000 units, up 20% and 59% of worldwide deployments, the United States almost 38,500 units, up 12%, Japan 36,219 units, down 19%, the Republic of Korea 30,000 units, down 1%, and Germany fewer than 25,000 units, down 8%. India installed almost 10,500 units, up 15%, and Brazil almost 4,300 units, up 38%, while Italy fell 11%, France fell 8%, Spain fell 15% and Mexico fell 7%.

Demand across Asia-Pacific is increasingly being met through domestic supply and state industrial programmes. Chinese robot manufacturers installed 195,000 units in 2025, up 15%, taking a 55% domestic share, while installations by foreign suppliers rose 27%. By customer industry, electrical and electronics was the largest at 96,400 units, up 16% for a 27% share, automotive reached a new peak of 78,900 units growing 38%, and metal and machinery reached 78,700 units, up 44%. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reported that China has built more than 7,000 advanced smart factories, including more than 500 at excellence level, with intelligent manufacturing equipment, industrial software and systematic solutions exceeding 4.5 trillion yuan, approximately USD 635.5 billion, while the 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026 to 2030 and its AI Plus initiative direct further intelligent transformation of manufacturing.

Japanese supplier results reflect the same regional distribution of demand. FANUC reported net sales of JPY 857,831 million for the year ended March 2026, up 7.6%, with operating income of JPY 183,763 million, up 15.7% at a 21.4% margin. The Robot segment grew 14.9% to JPY 378,610 million led by Chinese electric vehicle and general industry demand, the FA segment grew 7.0% to JPY 208,478 million on Japanese machine tool, Chinese and Indian demand, and Robomachine fell 5.8%. Asia accounted for 41.1% of sales and Japan for 12.9%, with guidance for the year ending March 2027 of JPY 909,600 million, up 6.0%. Mitsubishi Electric reported fiscal 2026 revenue of JPY 5,894.7 billion, up 7%, with operating profit of JPY 433.0 billion, up 11%, attributing record results partly to the factory automation systems business.

At the same time, the shift of deployment from new construction toward modernisation and compliance-driven replacement is reshaping the industrial automation ecosystem and creating new opportunities for engineering and software suppliers. United States private manufacturing construction stood at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of USD 168.2 billion in August 2026, unchanged from July and down 19.8% from USD 209.8 billion a year earlier, which moves the addressable opportunity toward modernisation of installed control systems. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery applies from 20 January 2027, replacing the 2006 Machinery Directive, and treats software performing a safety function and placed independently on the market as a safety component under Article 3(3), with Recital 54 placing self-evolving systems ensuring safety functions in Annex I and Article 6(1) requiring the conformity assessment procedures of Article 25(2). Every machine placed on the European market after that date must comply.

Market dynamics

21 factors across 5 forces
01

An Order Book That Turned Sharply Positive After a Trough Year

Demand inflected during the current period, and order intake recorded it before revenue did. Siemens Digital Industries fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 orders rose 30% to EUR 5,511 million even as full-year revenue fell 4% to EUR 17,788 million with profit down 24%, and nine-month fiscal 2026 orders then reached EUR 14,465 million, up 12%, with revenue up 10% and profit up 39% to EUR 2,583 million at an 18.3% margin against 14.6%. ABB reported second-quarter 2026 orders of USD 12,042 million, up 30% and 28% comparable, against revenue of USD 9,475 million, up 14%, implying a book-to-bill of approximately 1.27. Emerson reported underlying orders up 7% excluding AspenTech. Backlog of that scale converts across several quarters, which supports reported revenue through the early forecast years independently of new order flow.

02

Control Software and Recurring Revenue Outpacing Hardware

The software layer of automation grows at a multiple of the hardware beneath it and earns a materially higher margin, which shifts the value mix of this market. Rockwell Automation reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 Software & Control sales of USD 751 million, up 19% and 18% organic, at a 34.8% segment margin against 31.6%, compared with Intelligent Devices up 12% to USD 1,080 million at a 20.0% margin and Lifecycle Services down 12% to USD 482 million. In fiscal 2025 the same segment grew 9% to USD 2,383 million with 31% fourth-quarter growth while total sales grew 1%. Siemens Digital Industries third-quarter fiscal 2026 software revenue rose 16% to EUR 1,790 million, Emerson Software & Systems rose 11% underlying to USD 1,644 million, and Schneider Electric reported AVEVA annualised recurring revenue up 11%.

03

Chinese Robot Installations and Domestic Supplier Share

One country now sets global automation volume, and its own suppliers take the majority of it. World Robotics 2026 recorded Chinese industrial robot installations of 354,000 units in 2025, up 20% and 59% of worldwide deployments, within a global total of more than 600,000 units that grew 11% and an operational stock that rose 9% to a record 5 million units. Chinese manufacturers installed 195,000 of those units, up 15%, for a 55% domestic share against 57% in 2024, while foreign supplier installations rose 27%. By customer industry, electrical and electronics led at 96,400 units, up 16% for a 27% share, automotive reached a peak of 78,900 units growing 38%, and metal and machinery reached 78,700 units, up 44%. FANUC reported Asia at 41.1% of sales against 12.9% for Japan.

04

Semiconductor, Data Centre and Warehouse Automation Demand

Three end markets are pulling automation demand independently of the general manufacturing cycle. Rockwell Automation cited continued strength in semiconductor, data centre and warehouse automation alongside improving activity in automotive and life sciences while raising full-year fiscal 2026 guidance to organic growth of 7.5% to 9.5% from 5% to 9%, with a reported sales midpoint of approximately USD 9.0 billion. Schneider Electric reported triple-digit growth in hybrid automation demand from the semiconductor segment in the second quarter of 2026 alongside Industrial Automation revenue of EUR 3,585 million, up 7.7% organic with the second quarter up 11.0% and double-digit discrete product growth. Within China, electrical and electronics installed 96,400 robots, up 16%, making it the largest single customer industry in the largest single market.

05

European Machinery Compliance Before January 2027

A regulatory date inside the forecast window concentrates replacement decisions that would otherwise have been deferred. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery applies from 20 January 2027, replacing the 2006 Machinery Directive, and introduces requirements covering software-driven safety functions, artificial intelligence in safety components, cybersecurity and digital documentation. Article 3(3) treats software performing a safety function and placed independently on the market as a safety component, Recital 54 places systems with self-evolving behaviour ensuring safety functions in Annex I, Recital 55 limits the third-party provisions to fully or partially self-evolving machine learning approaches, and Annex I Part A machinery is subject under Article 6(1) to the conformity assessment procedures of Article 25(2). For installed machinery that commonly runs fifteen to twenty-five years, a compliance date of this kind brings forward modernisation of control architectures.

Geographic analysis

01

Asia-Pacific

Largest share

In 2026, Asia-Pacific is expected to account for the largest share of the global Industrial Automation Market. The region's dominance is supported by the scale of installed manufacturing capacity, by state direction of intelligent manufacturing investment, and by robot volume that now sets the global total. World Robotics 2026 recorded Chinese industrial robot installations of 354,000 units in 2025, up 20% and 59% of worldwide deployments, with Chinese manufacturers installing 195,000 of those units for a 55% domestic share, and with electrical and electronics the largest customer industry at 96,400 units, automotive at a peak of 78,900 units growing 38% and metal and machinery at 78,700 units, up 44%. Indian installations rose 15% to almost 10,500 units. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reported more than 7,000 advanced smart factories and an intelligent manufacturing equipment, industrial software and solutions industry exceeding 4.5 trillion yuan, approximately USD 635.5 billion. FANUC recorded Asia at 41.1% of sales against 12.9% for Japan, where installations fell 19% to 36,219 units, and Mitsubishi Electric attributed record fiscal 2026 revenue of JPY 5,894.7 billion partly to factory automation. Asia-Pacific

02

North America

Fastest growth

However, North America is projected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Growth across the United States and Canada is driven by the only growing developed-market robot demand, by semiconductor, data centre and warehouse automation projects, and by modernisation of an installed control base reaching the end of vendor support. World Robotics 2026 recorded United States installations of almost 38,500 units in 2025, up 12%, and Canadian installations of almost 4,000 units, up 5%, against declines across Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Korea. Rockwell Automation raised full-year fiscal 2026 guidance to organic growth of 7.5% to 9.5% with a reported sales midpoint of approximately USD 9.0 billion after third-quarter sales of USD 2,313 million, up 8% with organic growth of 10%, citing continued strength in semiconductor, data centre and warehouse automation. Emerson reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 Americas sales growth of 8%. Private manufacturing construction fell 19.8% to USD 168.2 billion, which redirects spending from structures toward the control content inside existing plants. North America

03

Europe

Europe is expected to account for the second-largest share of the global Industrial Automation Market in 2026, with demand concentrated in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Switzerland and Turkey. The region hosts the largest concentration of automation suppliers, including Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Bosch Rexroth, Festo, Phoenix Contact, Beckhoff, Danfoss and Endress+Hauser, which places capability close to buyers. Robot demand nevertheless contracted, with German installations falling 8% to fewer than 25,000 units, Italian falling 11% to approximately 7,800, French falling 8% to approximately 4,500 and Spanish falling 15% to approximately 4,300 in 2025. Emerson reported European sales down 1% in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and FANUC cited weak European FA demand. Against that, Siemens Digital Industries nine-month fiscal 2026 orders rose 12% to EUR 14,465 million with revenue up 10%, and Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applying from 20 January 2027 brings forward modernisation of control architectures across the installed machinery base. Europe

04

Latin America

Latin America accounts for a smaller share of the global Industrial Automation Market, with demand concentrated in Mexico and Brazil. Mexican activity follows nearshoring of automotive, appliance, aerospace and medical device assembly serving North American customers, although robot installations fell 7% to fewer than 5,200 units in 2025, which indicates that announced relocation has not yet converted into installed capacity. Brazilian demand is the regional bright spot, with installations rising 38% to almost 4,300 units and automotive installations rising 212% to almost 2,100 units, supported by mining, metals, pulp and paper, agricultural machinery and food processing. Rockwell Automation reported Latin American organic sales down 3% in the third quarter of fiscal 2026. Constraints include the cost of imported controllers and instruments, currency exposure on multi-year projects, and limited local engineering and integrator capacity, which lengthens commissioning timelines. Latin America

05

Middle East & Africa

The Middle East and Africa region accounts for the smallest share of the global Industrial Automation Market, with demand concentrated in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and South Africa. Gulf demand is led by industrial diversification programmes that pair new petrochemical, aluminium, fertiliser, pharmaceutical and building material capacity with process automation specified from the outset, which makes this one of the few regions where greenfield remains the dominant project type against a global shift toward brownfield modernisation driven by a 19.8% decline in United States manufacturing construction to USD 168.2 billion. Rockwell Automation identified oil and gas as a market facing possible adverse impacts, which is relevant to the regional mix, and reported Latin American organic sales down 3% in a quarter when Americas demand grew. South African demand concentrates in mining and metals, automotive assembly and food processing. Constraints include scarce controls and functional safety engineering capacity, grid reliability at inland sites, and long lead times on instruments and spares, which slow conversion of announced programmes into the roughly 5% to 10% annual growth the robotics industry association forecasts through 2029. Middle East & Africa

The global Industrial Automation Market is moderately consolidated, with competition among European and North American broad-line suppliers, Japanese automation manufacturers, component and subsystem specialists, and Asian volume suppliers. European and North American broad-line suppliers include Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Rockwell Automation, Emerson and Honeywell Technologies, while Japanese suppliers include Mitsubishi Electric, OMRON, Yokogawa, Azbil, FANUC, Yaskawa, KEYENCE, Nidec and Hitachi. Component and subsystem specialists include Robert Bosch through Bosch Rexroth, Festo, SMC, Phoenix Contact, Beckhoff, Danfoss, Cognex, Endress+Hauser and KUKA, and Asian volume suppliers include Delta Electronics, Shenzhen Inovance Technology and Advantech, alongside WEG in Latin America. Market participants compete primarily on control software capability, functional safety documentation, installed base access, service network density, delivery certainty, system interoperability and total cost of ownership.

Leading companies are investing in control software, industrial data platforms, functional safety capability and service network expansion to strengthen their market position. Portfolio restructuring has been a prominent feature of competitive activity, with Honeywell completing the separation of its aerospace business on 29 June 2026, shareowners receiving one Honeywell Aerospace share for every two Honeywell shares and a one-for-two reverse split reducing shares outstanding from approximately 634 million to approximately 317 million, leaving Honeywell Technologies as a pure-play automation company spanning building automation, industrial automation and process automation with more than 50,000 employees, an Accelerator operating system and a Forge intelligence layer. ABB agreed to sell its robotics business to SoftBank Group for USD 5.375 billion, expecting approximately USD 4.8 billion of net cash proceeds and completion in the second half of 2026, and intending to redeploy proceeds into the Rotork acquisition, while Schneider Electric agreed to acquire the industrial data and artificial intelligence software company Cognite for USD 3.1 billion. Differentiation continues to move toward software margin, functional safety documentation and delivery certainty, reflected in the Rockwell Automation segment structure of 34.8% in Software & Control against 20.0% in Intelligent Devices and 15.1% in Lifecycle Services.

Expert perspectives

The Industrial Automation Market is entering a period in which the geographic distribution of demand matters more to supplier performance than the aggregate growth rate. Industrial robot installations grew 20% in China, 12% in the United States, 15% in India and 38% in Brazil during 2025, while falling 19% in Japan, 8% in Germany, 15% in Spain, 11% in Italy, 8% in France, 7% in Mexico and 1% in the Republic of Korea. Order intake has turned ahead of revenue across the supplier base, with Siemens Digital Industries fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 orders up 30% to EUR 5,511 million and ABB second-quarter 2026 orders up 30% to USD 12,042 million against revenue of USD 9,475 million, giving a book-to-bill of approximately 1.27.

Three structural changes are expected to shape the market through 2036. First, semiconductors and electronics are expected to remain the largest end-use industry, because fabrication and advanced packaging capital expenditure carries more controls and instrumentation content per unit of output than process plant. Second, software and service content is expected to rise per installed system, as controllers, drives and historians are sold with learned functions and lifecycle support instead of as discrete hardware, reflected in Rockwell Automation Software & Control growth of 19% at a 34.8% margin against Lifecycle Services down 12%. Third, North America is expected to grow fastest among developed regions, as it was the only developed market in which robot installations grew during 2025, while volume growth elsewhere remains confined to a small number of countries.

For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions over the forecast period are likely to be found in control software and recurring service contracting, brownfield modernisation engineering, functional safety assessment capability ahead of the January 2027 European machinery deadline, semiconductor and data centre automation, and hybrid and batch process automation for regulated manufacture. The principal risks are the contraction of robot installations across Japan and Western Europe, the 19.8% year-on-year decline in United States private manufacturing construction that removes greenfield projects, the contraction of service and lifecycle revenue at the largest suppliers, and price competition from Chinese automation suppliers that now hold a 55% domestic share of a market which installed 354,000 robots in 2025.
