Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) market to witness strong growth through 2023

The global healthcare industry is in the phase of digital transformation and utilizing digital components and information technology to improve quality of care and patient outcomes while reducing the overall costs. Medical imaging is not an exception to this shift. With the increasing advancement in technology, nearly all specialties generate images and clinical reports ranging from radiology images, visible light images, ECG waveforms, and digital pathology among others that need to be archived electronically and made available through electronic medical and health record.

In recent years, growth in the generation of digital health data has resulted in increasing struggle for providers to manage the massive amount of patient information including medical images which are extensively scattered across multiple locations, facilities and clinical repositories hindering healthcare objectives tied to the shift towards collaborative, value-based care.

There is a growing adoption of VNA by the hospitals for storage of images and documents in a standard format with a standard interface, such that they can be accessed in a vendor-neutral manner by other systems. The technology allows medical facilities to switch their pre-existing PACS without having to migrate or convert data. Unlike PACS, a VNA system enables long-term storage and management. Factors such as the exploding number of images being generated in radiology and cardiology, adoption of electronic health record (EHR), meaningful use imaging requirements and physician demand for image access, the ability of VNA to solve problems associated with PACS such as the proliferation of data silos and the lack of data compatibility between disparate PACS are driving the demand of VNA by the hospitals. In addition, growing recognition of benefits of implementing a VNA in a hospital system such as integration of image records with EHR; easy access, management and sharing of medical images across the enterprise and beyond; increase in workflow efficiency, reduction in time, labor and costs; and emergence of cloud computing would further propel the adoption of VNA by the hospitals.

Owing to the unique properties of VNA, this market segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.8% to reach $831.1 million by 2023, according to Meticulous Research®.
