Report overview
Segments covered: offering, method, application, end user.
The growth of this market is mainly driven by the rising cancer burden and growing use of epigenetic biomarkers in oncology, the growing pipeline and approvals of epigenetic and chromatin-targeted therapies, advances in epigenomic technologies, and the clinical adoption of methylation-based cancer detection. In addition, multi-cancer early detection and liquid biopsy, epigenetic editing therapeutics, single-cell and spatial multiomics, and expansion in emerging markets are expected to create growth opportunities for players operating in this market.
The global Epigenetics Market is projected to reach USD 8.5 billion by 2036, driven by methylation-based cancer screening, epigenetic drug development, and new enzymatic, five-base and long-read methylation technologies.
North America is expected to account for the largest market share of 50.0% in 2026, while Asia-Pacific is projected to register the fastest growth at a CAGR of 13.7% during the forecast period, and China is projected to register the highest CAGR of any country, at 15.0%.
By offering, the Kits & Reagents segment is expected to account for the largest market share of 69.4% in 2026, whereas the Software segment is projected to register the highest CAGR of 15.1% during the forecast period.
By method, the DNA Methylation segment is expected to account for the largest share of 34.4% in 2026, while Chromatin Analysis is projected to register the highest CAGR of 15.3%; within DNA methylation, enzymatic, five-base and native long-read methods are projected to grow at 19.0%.
By end user, Hospitals & Diagnostic Laboratories are projected to register the highest CAGR of 17.3%, supported by the FDA approvals of the Shield blood test and Cologuard Plus in 2024 and a favorable FDA advisory committee vote on the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test in September 2026.
Chromatin-targeted drugs have entered standard care: the FDA approved revumenib, the first menin inhibitor, in November 2024 and ziftomenib in November 2025, and epigenetic editing produced first clinical data in May 2026.
New England Biolabs launched EM-seq v2 in January 2025 with a 100-fold lower minimum DNA input, and Illumina launched its 5-base solution in October 2025, which reads genetic variants and DNA methylation from the same sample.
The Epigenetics Market comprises the kits and reagents, instruments and accessories, services and software used to detect, map and quantify epigenetic modifications, which are heritable changes in gene activity that occur without a change in the DNA sequence. The main mechanisms analyzed are DNA methylation, histone modification, RNA modification and chromatin accessibility and organization. These tools are used in cancer and disease research, epigenetic drug discovery and development, and increasingly in methylation-based cancer screening and diagnosis.
Epigenetics has moved from a specialized research field to a core layer of genomic analysis. DNA methylation is chemically stable, can be measured in blood, stool and tissue, and changes early in tumor development, which is why it underlies FDA-approved screening tests. The Guardant Shield blood test was approved in July 2024 and received a Medicare payment of USD 1,495, Cologuard Plus was approved in October 2024 with 95% sensitivity for colorectal cancer, and GRAIL completed its premarket approval application for the Galleri test in January 2026.
The technology base of the epigenetics market changed significantly between 2024 and 2026. Enzymatic methyl-seq, five-base sequencing and native methylation detection on PacBio and Oxford Nanopore long-read platforms are replacing bisulfite conversion in new projects, and CUT&RUN and CUT&Tag have broadly supplanted chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing. At the same time, single-cell chromatin accessibility and multiome assays are scaling to the sample numbers needed for drug discovery.
Research funding pressure held back academic purchasing in 2025. The U.S. administration proposed a cut of nearly 40% to the National Institutes of Health budget for fiscal 2026, Merck KGaA reported that sales of its Science & Lab Solutions business were around stable organically in 2025, and 10x Genomics reported that instrument revenue fell 36% in the fourth quarter of 2025. However, consumables, clinical testing and pharmaceutical demand continued to grow.
The market is expected to grow 3.2-fold between 2026 and 2036, with clinical testing, epigenetic drug development and new methylation chemistries as the main sources of growth, while lower-cost methods, such as high-resolution melt analysis, PCR and sonication, grow more slowly.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, there were about 20 million new cancer cases worldwide in 2022, and the number is projected to reach about 35 million by 2050, an increase of 77%. Aberrant DNA methylation occurs early in tumor development and is specific to the tissue of origin, which makes methylation markers suitable for early detection, classification and monitoring of cancer. As a result, oncology is expected to account for 78.4% of the Epigenetics Market in 2026.
In November 2024, the FDA approved revumenib, the first menin inhibitor, for relapsed or refractory acute leukemia with a KMT2A translocation, followed by approval in NPM1-mutated acute myeloid leukemia in October 2025. In November 2025, the FDA approved a second menin inhibitor, ziftomenib. NPM1 mutations occur in about 30% of adult acute myeloid leukemia cases, and the histone deacetylase inhibitor givinostat was approved for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in March 2024. Every epigenetic drug program uses antibodies, enzymes, histone substrates and sequencing-based assays, which drives demand from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
New England Biolabs launched EM-seq v2 in January 2025, an enzymatic alternative to bisulfite conversion that works with as little as 100 picograms of DNA. Illumina launched its 5-base solution in October 2025, with less than one day of library preparation and DRAGEN dual-omic analysis in less than one hour, and PacBio added native 5-hydroxymethylcytosine detection to its Revio and Vega systems in April 2025. EpiCypher launched meCUT&RUN in April 2025, which detects more than 80% of methylated CpGs captured by whole-genome approaches with more than 20 times less sequencing.
The Shield blood test was approved in July 2024 based on the ECLIPSE study of more than 20,000 patients and received Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory Test status in March 2025. Guardant Health reported about 87,000 Shield tests in 2025 and guided to 230,000 to 245,000 tests in 2026. In September 2026, an FDA advisory committee voted seven to two that the benefits of the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test outweigh its risks.
Genome-wide epigenetic analysis requires sequencing capacity, specialized single-cell or long-read instruments and bioinformatics. PacBio reported annualized consumables pull-through of about USD 242,000 per Revio system in the fourth quarter of 2025, and 10x Genomics reported that single-cell instrument revenue fell 44% year-on-year in the same quarter, reflecting the difficulty of funding capital purchases.
Academic and government research is a major user of epigenetics tools. The proposed cut of nearly 40% to the National Institutes of Health budget for fiscal 2026 and a challenging market in China reduced academic purchasing in 2025. As a result, the Academic & Research Institutes segment is projected to register the lowest CAGR among end users, at 9.9%.
Methylation-based liquid biopsy can detect signals from many cancer types in one blood draw and predict the tissue of origin. The Galleri test, which detects more than 50 cancer types, has a list price of USD 949, and its application is supported by data from 25,490 participants in PATHFINDER 2 and more than 70,000 participants in the NHS-Galleri trial. Approval and coverage would create a large new testing population for methylation reagents, enzymes and sequencing.
Epigenetic editing silences or activates genes without cutting DNA. Tune Therapeutics presented the first clinical evidence of epigenetic silencing of hepatitis B virus in May 2026, and Epicrispr Biotechnologies dosed the first patient with EPI-321 for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy in August 2025 and completed dose escalation in July 2026. These programs require methylation analysis, off-target profiling and chromatin assays throughout development.
10x Genomics launched the next generation of Chromium Flex in October 2025, profiling up to 384 samples and 100 million cells per week, and agreed to acquire Scale Biosciences in August 2025. Multiomic assays, such as Epi Multiome and Multiomic CUT&RUN, combine chromatin, methylation and gene expression data, creating demand for single-cell epigenomic reagents and analysis software.
Asia-Pacific is projected to register the highest CAGR of 13.7% during the forecast period, led by China at 15.0% and India at 13.2%. New England Biolabs opened New England Biolabs India Pvt. Ltd. in March 2026, reflecting growing supplier investment in the region.
A whole-genome methylation dataset covers about 28 million CpG sites, and bisulfite, enzymatic and native long-read methods do not always give identical results. EpiCypher launched CUTANA Cloud in November 2025 to simplify chromatin data analysis, but the shortage of bioinformatics expertise remains a challenge for many laboratories.
The NHS-Galleri randomized trial did not meet its primary endpoint in 2026, and the FDA advisory committee split six to four on the effectiveness of Galleri. Galleri is not covered by Medicare or most health insurance plans, which shows the time and cost of validating epigenetic diagnostics.
Enzymatic, five-base and native long-read methods avoid the DNA damage caused by bisulfite and, in some cases, deliver genome and methylome data from the same molecule. The Other DNA Methylation Methods segment, which includes these approaches, is projected to grow at 19.0%, compared with 12.5% for bisulfite conversion.
CUT&RUN and CUT&Tag require far fewer cells and less sequencing than ChIP-seq and do not require chromatin shearing. EpiCypher and New England Biolabs expanded their partnership in May 2026 to co-develop next-generation epigenomics tools, while the Sonication segment is projected to register the lowest CAGR among methods, at 7.5%.
Illumina introduced the Billion Cell Atlas with AstraZeneca, Merck and Eli Lilly in January 2026, PacBio uses deep learning to call methylation from sequencing kinetics, and Active Motif became the exclusive global distributor of Arima Genomics Hi-C research products in July 2026, supporting growth in the Chromatin Analysis segment.

Expert perspectives
The Epigenetics Market is moving from a research-tool market to one shaped by clinical testing and drug development. Methylation-based cancer screening has achieved FDA approval, Medicare payment and guideline inclusion, chromatin-targeted drugs have become standard care in a common leukemia subtype, and epigenetic editing has entered the clinic. These changes create recurring, high-volume demand that is less exposed to research funding cycles.
Three structural changes are expected to shape competitive positions through 2036. First, sequencing platform companies are integrating methylation detection into their chemistries, as with the Illumina 5-base solution and native long-read methylation, which reduces demand for standalone bisulfite kits. Second, low-input chromatin methods, such as CUT&RUN and CUT&Tag, are replacing ChIP-seq and sonication-based workflows. Third, software and artificial intelligence are becoming central to extracting value from epigenomic data.
For companies planning entry or expansion, the most attractive positions are likely to be found in enzymatic and native methylation chemistries, methylation-based liquid biopsy reagents, single-cell and chromatin analysis, epigenomic software and services, and supply of clinical laboratories in China and other Asia-Pacific markets. For established suppliers, the principal risks are academic funding pressure and the substitution of older methods by integrated sequencing workflows.
