According to United Nations (UN) there are more than 7 billion living humans on Earth, yet 200 years ago this number was less than 1 billion. Recent estimates from the UN suggest that 6.5 percent of all people ever born are alive right now. This is a clear indication of how much the population has grown during 1900 to 2000 while before thousands of years, population grew very slowly. The current world population is more than three times greater than the entire previous history of humanity– an increase from 1.5 to more than 7 billion in just 100 years.

This growth in the population is expected to continue in near future as well. For instance, according to World Population Data Sheet from the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) published in 2016, global human population is expected grow by 75 million annually or with 1.1% per year. With this the world population is expected to reach 9.9 billion in 2050, increase of 33% from an estimated 7.4 billion in 2017.

Such massive amount of population is certain to create a lot of burden over the natural resources; the healthcare systems, infrastructure, and most importantly there will be huge surge in the demand of food. Even today many underdeveloped countries have serious problem of food deficit that need to be addressed. According to FAO, demand for cereals, for both food and animal feed is projected to reach 3 billion tones by 2050, up from today’s nearly 2.1 billion tones. Also the advent of biofuel can cause the shortage for food in future as it would compete heavily for the agricultural produce.

In these circumstances feeding a world population of 9.1 billion people in 2050 would require raising overall food production by 70%. This can be achieved only if the production in developing country is doubled. This would require proactive initiative from the government bodies to boost the agricultural production by means of subsidies, advanced agricultural practices, modified seeds, and crop protection chemicals.
